Following the expansion of their production, the company pharmaceuticals company Galex commissioned a new structure adjacent to their existing laboratories building from 1999. Connected with the old building by an overhang, the new structure houses offices on the upper floor and manipulation areas on the ground floor. Its pronounced horizontal form echoes the outline of surrounding wheat fields, the natural setting also influences the subdued selection of materials and colour scheme: concrete elevations are complemented by details in black and silver metal.

Cvetkova Apartments in Murska Sobota, Slovenia by Andrej Kalamar

Apartment buildings are located in a redeveloped downtown area that has recently been converted from derelict industrial to public and residential use. Despite its central position in the city, the site is removed from main roads and downtown bustle. Next to the new music school on the north of the city block, three apartment buildings rise from a green surface. Their positions reflect the heterogeneous surroundings; variety of directions influences the varying orientations of the volumes. As there are no parallel facades, each apartment can establish an individual character without obstruction.

Theatre Park in Murska Sobota, Slovenia by Andrej Kalamar

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

The Cinema Park Building was erected in the 1950s from plans by the modernist architect Franc Novak. Slowly falling into disrepair, it was still used for film shows until the new century, when it became obsolete due to the construction of a new multiplex.  A solution was found in a new, more ambitious programme: a conversion into a theatre and concert hall, preserving the designated landmark building with a fitting new programme for a small city with a large theatre audience that previously lacked an adequate theatre space. This way, the city of Murska Sobota reinforces its position as a regional centre and at the same time preserves the exceptional example of modernist architecture.
