This is a house for a small family of husband+wife+child, located in the outskirts of Nara.
A parking space facing the road in front, extends the full width of the front opening, so as to accommodate all the cars for daily use and the motor bikes for the owner’s hobby. This is why the façade is set back to give space to the parking area. The building itself projects a closed image, except for the hobby area on the first floor, which is a widely open space with glass openings facing the collection of moterbikes.

This house was designed to be situated among the mountains of Nara Prefecture located in Midwest of Japan. The south side of the house place is connecting with the gentle slopes, we can see green valleys under us without any concern of people eyes. The client is a married couple having one child. They wanted to house that “living” by physically itself linked directly to the atmosphere, with fostering their kids. So, they planned the house which was pulled out from the mountain, as the solid blocks. The pulled out land exposes the soil surface on the top of the land, it includes the buds of the plants as well as life of the insects in the walls.
This site is situated at a residential area in Ikoma-city, Nara where is little colder in winter compared to the inner-city of Osaka. But it shares a border with Osaka and the residents can commute in only 30 minutes, so it functions as a bedroom suburb of both Osaka and Nara. This area is a typical suburban residential area of Japan and designed to satisfy the orthodox practices of city planning. The inner road and the building distance are wide enough and each house has the southern garden.
The site is located at the very end of the residential section developed in the 1970s in Nara, Japan. There are homogeneous prefabricated houses in one side, and ancient Japanese-styled houses and rich nature spread in another side. It is the typical site of Nara.
