Delfland Water Authority in Delft, Netherlands by mecanoo architecten

Monday, September 17th, 2018

Article source: mecanoo architecten

The Delfland Water Authority is located in a historical building on the Oude Delft: the Gemeenlandshuis. The monumental part was built in 1505 as a house for Jan de Huyter. The sandstone facade was unique for that time and it was one of the few buildings to survive the 1536 city fire. More than 100 years later, the house came into the hands of the Delfland Water Authority.

The World’s Biggest Bicycle Parking in Utrecht, Netherlands by Ector Hoogstad Architecten

Friday, September 7th, 2018

Article source: Ector Hoogstad Architecten

Historically, the Dutch have always been fervent cyclists. This enthusiasm is now growing even further as cycling is being discovered as a key ingredient of the sustainable city. New bicycle typologies such as the introduction of the so-called e-bike are helping to amplify this shift in mass transportation. More and more public transport hubs will be complemented with extensive and user friendly amenities for cyclists, as increasing amounts of people begin to favour the combination of cycling and public transport over car use.

Article source:MARC KOEHLER ARCHITECTS

Superlofts Blok Y, a cooperative housing project in Utrecht designed by Marc Koehler Architects, wins the Private Housing category of the 2018 Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (BNA) award for Building of the Year.

Designed as an Open Building, Superloft Blok Y forms part of the ongoing Superlofts project, initiated by Marc Koehler Architects (MKA), focused on flexibility, participation and adaptability. It offered a collective of 30 homeowners a blank canvas to customise or design and build their apartments according to their needs, and actively engaged them from the outset to co-create the building and its shared spaces. A unique complex – where no two apartments are alike – results from the building’s radical flexibility, collective character and high level of sustainability.

An old sugar refinery on an Amsterdam canal, converted into contemporary loft by architect Standard Studio.

Walking through Amsterdam’s city centre is always a delight because of the beautiful architecture. Although we are often left with the urge to see inside the buildings. Luckily we have the opportunity to see a typical canal house which dates from 1752, and used to be a sugar refinery two and a half centuries ago. Standard Studio, an architecture and interior design firm from Amsterdam, did the full renovation and interior design for this monument on the unesco protected canals.

Strawinskylaan bicycle parking in Amsterdam, Netherlands by wUrck architecture urban landscape BV

Thursday, August 30th, 2018

Article source: wUrck architecture urban landscape BV

Opposite Amsterdam Zuid railway station, the Strawinskylaan bicycle parking, designed by wUrck, opened in May. With a capacity of 3,750 spaces it became the largest underground bike parking in the Dutch capital. Thoughtfully designed and offering a high level of comfort, it is seen as setting a new standard for this kind of facility.

The Strawinskylaan bicycle parking is located just north of Amsterdam Zuid railway station and adds 3,750 places to the existing Zuidplein (2,700 places) and Mahlerplein (3,000 places) parkings in the area. Providing good parking facilities for bikes is an important part of the municipal strategy to guarantee a sustainable and comfortable access of the public transport node while increasing the quality of the public space. The parking is located under the former Vijfhoek park, which will be redeveloped in the coming months into a neighbourhood square with playground facilities.

The Green House in Utrecht, Netherlands by cepezed

Monday, August 27th, 2018

Article source: cepezed

The circular pavilion The Green House officially opened its doors on Monday 9 April. The Green House offers space for a restaurant with its own urban farm, and a meeting center. The project is an initiative of Strukton, Ballast Nedam and Albron. The circular architectural design is made by cepezed.

In 2014 cepezed was commissioned to make a modern government office from the former Knoopkazerne on the Croeselaan in Utrecht. The Central Government Real Estate Company also requested a solution for the space between the Knoopkazerne and the adjacent head office of Rabobank. Because a definitive destination for this location will be decided in fifteen years, a temporary interpretation was sought that could make the area that would otherwise remain vacant, more lively. cepezed developed a plan in which both the function and the architecture are based on circularity.

Small and mid-size companies often have trouble finding suitable office space in Amsterdam. The creative industry has seemingly unrealistic demands when it comes to office locations: an incubator of ideas, which is spacious and inspiring, with a unique design at a great location with car access. Salt is a response to these needs, providing small, high quality offices, each with a unique identity. The building forms part of Amsterdam’s port redevelopment Minervahaven, contributing to its ambition to become a new creative hub.

Campus Hoogvliet in Rotterdam, Netherlands by Wiel Arets Architects

Friday, August 17th, 2018

Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

Campus Hoogvliet is a cluster of six buildings that together compose one academic and socially focused campus, located just outside of Rotterdam. These six new buildings–a sports center, an art studio, a safety academy, 100 residential units within one building, and two schools–have been plugged into a programmed tarmac that communicates the campus’ boundary, and includes custom designed seating, a running track, and other place-making denotations. The campus’ immediate surroundings are characterized by mid-twentieth century housing developments–which were prolifically constructed during its booming period of post-WWII growth–and the campus aims to rectify the social and cultural deterioration that coupled the demolition of this once historic village.
