SQUARE HOUSE VEIERLAND in Nøtterøy, Norway by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

Friday, August 16th, 2013

Article source: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

The house is situated in a pine wood on Veierland, a car-free island outside Nøtterøy in Vestfold. Perched on stilts above a rocky ridge it gently hovers in the woodland, leaving no footprint. This impression is further enhanced by a homogenous surface of dark wood, which gives the house an inconspicuous, almost muted character.

Strømbu Service Centre and Rest Area in Folldal, Norway by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk

Saturday, July 20th, 2013

Article source: Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk

The 42kmRondane Tourist Roadgoes on the east side of the Rondane Mountains from Enden in the south to Folldal in the north. The centre is situated near the midpoint of this route, and the place also serves as a main starting point for mountain hikers. The placing together of the two user groups has been important for the layout. For the car tourist: How to be introduced to nature and the mountains during a few minutes stop. And for the hiker: How to leave or come back to civilisation after days in the wilderness. Strømbu is also an information centre for several activities in the district, and the place is basically run and operated by the local parish.

Article source: Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk AS

Despite the informal program the small service building on Jektvik ferry terminal the project is very much an experiment. Besides of meeting some very pragmatic functions – a waiting room and two rest rooms – the projects is first and foremost about transparency and construction  and the architectural consequences of these.

Eggum Tourist Route in Norway by Snohetta

Tuesday, June 4th, 2013

Article source: Snohetta

Eggum is a community which lies on the seaward side of Vestvågøy in Lofoten. The former fishing village faces directly out to sea, on a small, level strip of land between steep cliffs and the sea. There are not many fishermen left at Eggum, but a good many people still live there. During the summer season Eggum is a very popular place to come to see the midnight sun. Apart from North Cape, Eggum is claimed to be the best place for such observations. The tourists gather in the area round Kvalhausen, which lies a little way past Eggum itself. Kvalhausen is a hill which was used as a radar station by the occupying German forces during the second world war. The foundation wall around the old radar station still stands. ”The Fort” as the locals call it, is a local landmark.
