The intervention is located in the residential neighborhood of Los Laureles de Asunción, on a recently paved street that has begun to have more and more disturbing vehicular traffic. The initial commission: a quick and routine repair that would consist of laying one or two walls, fixing the bathrooms, and general painting.
Although the original building had a solid structure, we were able to verify that the facilities were in a considerable state of deterioration due to the passage of time, with subsidence of floors as a result of leaks, fissures, and moisture stains. There were narrow and dark spaces that did not favor good lighting and natural ventilation, among other shortcomings in the functional design of the house.
To understand the essence of the preexistence of this building we rely on its history narrated by the former users, aiming for the proposal being the next step in the evolution of this small house located near the centre of Asunción on a plot of just six meters width.
The Hillside House is located in San Bernardino, far enough away to drive off the noise, 45 minutes from the city of Asuncion, and close enough to enjoy its privileged nature.
Therefore, the approach of the house on the hillside is implanted in an inclined base plane with more than 30% of an unparalleled view, an exuberant vegetation, a lake as the lanscape end, inserted in an protagonist environment.
The hillside is strengthened with the construction of the house as a negative of the topography, modifying the ground as little as possible, positive soil – negative house, allowing the making of a house in 3 levels, upper and lower levels as intimate of bedrooms; and the intermediate level contains the social área, the water mirror as a reflection of the protagonist vegetation, a landscape frame.
Housing architecture reflects the way in which we understand our being-in-the-world, and represents the conjunction of wishes, wills, emotions and ideals. The imagination process in the construction of space is, at the same time, the most basic and the most complex exercise, understanding that the house is life’s actual scenario.
We decided to abandon housing’s typological palette, rejecting trending catalogues that imprison new ways of imagining the house as a construction that must morph and transform according to life’s constant changes.
This weekend house is located in the city of San Bernardino, Paraguay, a summer town bordering the Ypacarai lake, the land is around 50x50mts and it has a view that is not very clean, towards the lake, and a side view towards the sierras of the Cordillera department.
We design in an exposed and desolate plane, no limits shown. For this reason we fold the base plane and we generate the “refuge”. We understand that the main feature of dwellings is care, and the essence of building is letting dwell*. Keeping the space from the popping of any foreign object but for the folding of the base plane, so the dwelling is prepared in is wrinkles, respecting the environment and making that the green constant, allowing the preservation of the inhabitant’s intimacy with its corrugations. Where these folds are broken, openings are generated. And they joined together with bridges wrapped in transparencies at double height, and topped by a fragment of sphere like a roof. Thus, the “Culata Yovai” is ready and disposed in his “tekoha”.
This project is a bird watching spot. Fundacion milenio and hsbc bank financed it. This place is very important, because asuncion has always been looking away from the river, and with these types of proyects they are finally looking towards the river. This area is a bay, and is very important for bird migration, because hundreds of bird species rest in this area in order to continue their journey, so not only do you see native birds, but also exotic ones. Asuncion has almost lost it’s integration to nature, however, projects like these are trying to strengthen that bond.

a young couple and the birth of their first born child trust us to propose their home. economy and practicality are the basic concepts. south america, paraguay. here the architecture is subjected to the shade conditions ( 35°c. in the summer), to the use of the prevailing wind (north-east), and the protection of the raw winters with nearly polar winds (south). these elements give us the keys to rethink a better space for the integral development of the human beings.
