This home is located in a privileged plot in Patagonia Argentina, surrounded by forests and incredible views to the River.
It’s original placement with the home located towards the back of the plot, comes from the decision to approach the river side and optimize the views, generating the garden towards the front taking advantage of the best orientation.
This 650m2 home develops in section, obtaining three levels of uses interconnected by a central space, still maintaining the privacy of each room. The social area is located in an elevated level to get the best views of the landscape. It is accessed by an irregular ramp that creates a unique path towards the house entrance.
The off-grid house is located in a remote landscape on the southwestern bajada of the Canelo Hills in Southern Arizona’s San Rafael Valley, two hours southeast of Tucson and 15 miles north of the US/Mexico Border. Siting is balanced between the prospect of the open range and distant mountains toward the west and refuge from those who may venture across the landscape. Proximity to the border and immigrant related foot traffic led the owner to request an impenetrable structure.
The inspiration are the sheep farm’s buildings of Patagonia.
Not the main houses of the estancias, their warm interiors closed to their place, but the buildings made for the sheep farm works where daily life in Patagonia is lived, and finds an splendor of its own; the barns for drying the sheep’s hides and for the many other works at the estancias, that have to be done inside because of the cold or the wind, or both.
An the other many signs of human live dispersed in Patagonia, like the endless wire fences, the small houses for the shepherd’s dogs, etc.
The “Techos” house is a vacation home located on the shores of the Nahuelhuapi Lake of south Argentina and close by to the town of Villa la Angostura. The site is in the forest of trees dating back 200 years and arriving up to the edge of the lake.
This 130 m² house is constructed in “Los Huemules” Ecological Reserve, 10 km from El Chalten town in the southern part of Santa Cruz province, Argentina. The Patagonian natural environment that surrounds the project was the most important input for designing this residence: the scale of the construction is aligned with the forest canopy providing a contained horizontal view from the interior to the sheltered heart of the forest.
The project is situated in the border of Queulat National Park in Patagonia, 3 hours away from Cohiaique, which is the nearest city. This compromised the material and construction logistics decisions to secure its construction quality and ageing because of tough climate conditions. The project was built in 4 months. The process consists of bottled glacial water.
