Casa LB4 in Piura, Perú by Riofrio + Rodrigo Arquitectos

Sunday, January 22nd, 2017

Article source: Riofrio + Rodrigo Arquitectos

This project was developed under the constraints given by the client and the extreme temperatures and climate in the city of Piura. In response to the client’s needs, a compact house was appropriate but in order to ensure the house remained cool in extreme heat, we decided to turn the volume to be parallel to the longest side of the lot. From here, cross ventilation was maximized and the house was protected against the strength of afternoon sun. The result is an elongated volume in the middle of the plot which enjoys the open space from all the rooms within the house. Finally, the terrace is a contiguous space to the larger but compact volume, thereby giving it a preferential position to the garden.

“Design Lab in the desert” in Piura, Peru by Jorge Losada

Article source: Jorge Losada

The City of Piura, located in the desert of Sechura, it is surrounded by sand and dunes and the river, named after the city, barely generates a shy green corridor. However, in this difficult context, the University of Piura managed to reforest approximately a hundred and fifty hectares with a dry woodland, an oasis based on algarrobo trees where the University could settle their facilities.

House LB in Piura, Peru by Riofrio + Rodrigo Arquitectos

The house is located in northern Peru, near the equator, in the city of Piura. Intense heat is an important factor when designing for this area. This particular external characteristic impacts how the home’s inhabitants use conventional spaces. We observe that the terrace is the most important social environment so we made it the protagonist of the design by moving its location to the center of the house. The entrance of the house invites you right back outside by leading you to the terrace, and as an afterthought the garden and pool. You can find the more traditional living room and dining rooms on the flanks of the terrace, as if containing it.
