Vitória 225 in Portugal by Paulo Freitas e Maria João Marques Arquitectos, Lda

Wednesday, April 25th, 2018

Article source: Paulo Freitas e Maria João Marques Arquitectos, Lda

In the Historic Center of Porto, an opportunity appears to develop a contemporary dwelling capable of being urbanistically integrated into the morphology of the city. Owned by the same owners as the next-door building, the project was thought out in a way that could create new spaces for extending their own dwelling, as well as adding two new studios. The challenge was to create a building that would adapt to the accentuated gap of the vacant lot located in Rua da Vitória, one of the oldest streets in the city, and to take advantage of the privileged view of the urban landscape of this World Heritage Site.

Second Home Offices in Lisbon, Portugal by Selgascano Arquitectos

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

Article source: Selgascano Arquitectos

This is the first project built for Secondhome outside London. It is located in an “L” shape wing of the Lisboa Mercado da Ribeira, a popular landmark built in 1882. The only real idea behind this project is to preserve the character and main features of this space while adapting it to a workspace. The building character is defined by a large open space flaked by column shaped iron windows and beautiful iron-cast trusses in the roof. We preserved all of them and kept the inherited idea of one single open space, making small companies to share a huge table (70×10 meters) divided in three, encouraging the relationship and communication between them. The curved cuts in the table give members their own private area to focus on their work while keeping a sense of community.

The theme of this exhibition was the artistic work of the portuguese King Fernando II (1816-1885). He was very dedicated to value the arts in general and he had an abundant personal artistic production, in the areas of drawing, engraving and decorative arts. The exhibition was installed in the Pena palace in Sintra, summer residence of the King, as an extra zone of the normal visit to the palace. The objective was to develop an installation that continued the romantic and intimate language of the palace. The intervention values the original space presenting an combination of furniture and color coherent with palace visual language. All the technical installations are hidden. The exhibition presents drawings, engravings an objects mounted in wall frames and showcases, all designed specially for the exhibition and inspired in the romantic language of the palace. The furniture design, the color and the graphic communication intend to create a very intimate mood, deeply connected to the king’s character.
