The allotment of Violantas was designed along a street with lots on both sides and is located in the parish of Beiriz. The surrounding area has fields for cultivating corn and grass, but to the west in the distance you can already see the “towers” of the city, in Póvoa de Varzim.
The narrow and long lot, with a wide area for implantation and construction, made it possible to organize the volumes according to the needs of single-family housing. In the street, it was mandatory to maintain and rebuild the granite wall that separates the parking area and the car circulation area.
The Argivai House, in Póvoa de Varzim, is located on the outskirts of the city, an area with different housing types, some crop fields and small warehouses.
The lot has an irregularly shape, is very narrow next to the street, and allows the construction of two floors, without providing any annex or basement. The covered area, on the side of the house, protects a car from the rain and also the access to the main entrance of this house.
The interior organization defines the circulation and service spaces (bathrooms and laundry room) in the central area of the house, leaving larger spaces (living room, kitchen and bedrooms) on the main facades.
Aguçadoura House is located in a small allotment in a bathing village with the same name in the north of Portugal. Taking advantage of the unique climatic conditions and soil quality the surroundings are also known for having many greenhouses used for growing vegetables.
Over the years the allotment had a slow growth so there are still some empty allocations near Aguçadoura House. The plot is a combination of two parcels of land being that the house occupies only one and the other one is for the garden. However, there is a shared porch that can be used for car parking placed between the two parcels.
The housing is located in the town of Povoa de Varzim, in the city center, with strong traits of fishing, considered one of the largest fishing colonies in the country and whose houses reflected for many years this condition: 8 meters wide houses, splited in two when the family increased number.
The client, a native of Povoa de Varzim, grew up in this house and moved to Lisbon for professional reasons. Currently divided between Lisbon – work, and Povoa de Varzim – rest.
Despite located in a rural context of complex characterization the BL house develops a true relation with the exterior surroundings through an extended patio that leads to a plateau where we can gather around a bonfire. the entrance in space and amplitude suggests the remaining spaces and combines the three floors in a straightforward way.
