The project site located in front of an original locust forests at the southern edge of Aranya, Qinhuangdao. Clients have already constructed a black steel frame structure on site, filled with glass, a double-slope roof covered by tent cloth with a max height of 6.3 meters, which stand on a rectangular concrete base.
The architect is designated to renovate it into a restaurant operated by Zhenziwei seafood hotpot, which is selected in “2022 Black Pearl Restaurant Guide.” This is Zhenziwei’s first branch that outside of Beijing. Thus it would redefine the image of the brand.
The project is a supporting property of Beidaihe SEATOPIA Coastal Holiday Complex. It accommodates an owner’s canteen, two characteristic restaurants and an interesting roof platform in about 2000 square meters.
The project extracts the unique geometric shape of starfish, and take “the Ocean Star” as the design concept, which allows the building to grow naturally on the seaside, helps the building integrate into the environment of SEATOPIA as well. The “starfish” structure can not only give consideration to the relationship between structure and aesthetics, but also have the unique texture of gravel which set the scenes of vacation life in detail.

When enlightened developer Aranya asked Neri&Hu to design an art center inside their seaside resort community, Neri&Hu seized the opportunity to question the notions of space for art versus communal space. Despite the straightforward brief of an art center, Aranya, as a community has a strong emphasis on the spiritual nature of their lifestyle ideology, an oneness with the environment. So the design scheme is as much about the internal courtyard, a communal space for the residents, as it is about the exhibition being displayed in the center.
A new beach house has recently been completed in Aranya, Qinhuangdao, China. Qinhuangdao, with its geographic reason as having the nearest beach, is known as the most populous city for millions of people from Beijing and Tianjin to enjoy their summer holidays. Yet an-hour drive down south from the massive crowd, a small town – Aranya, for its serene beach environment and great community engagement, in the last 5 years has become the destination for the new middle-class, to pursue a “quality holiday resort” lifestyle, and ideal location for beach houses.
Located in a prime position within steps to the beach, this site not only takes in sweeping view of the sea without any obstruction, but also well enhanced by the pitched-roof“spiritual center”of the Aranya Chapel.
The aim of the dining club is to experience the forest that is next to the site by the shore. The first thing is to deal with the relationship between the building and the nature: by doing this we let the building in contact with the forest from three sides, which then divides the volume into three units with trees planted in between, therefore the building intersects with the forest in a harmonious way and the range of scenery viewing is maximized. The three major units are connected by a circulation block facing the community. Glass curtain walls are applied at the forest-facing facade. Light transmitting concrete is used on the side facing the community, and a layer of timber gratings sits in front of it, which hides the entrance behind and blends the building with its surrounding nature. The two simple-formed pitched roofs are at different heights, and the double-layered eave brings a lightweight feeling to the building.
Wutopia Lab was commissioned by Aranya to renovate part of club house into a restaurant for kids. We hope to create a neverland for kids in this space of less than 1,000 square meters.
