Our province is the perfect testing ground for technical apparel — you don’t have to go far to find inspiration…. Our vision is for B.C. to become the global hub for athletic performance apparel and recreational products, and the first step is to provide a place to cultivate design talent.” − Shannon Wilson With over 300 apparel companies, BC’s lower mainland is a centre of excellence for technical apparel design. The vision for the new Wilson School of Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University is to be the preeminent school for this industry. The broader purpose of the University is to fuel the local economy by generating a steady pool of talent and expertise in the fields of interior design, fashion marketing, graphic design for marketing, product design, and fashion and technology. Indeed, one of the key strengths sighted by industry of KPU graduates is their facility with this array of disciplines. The design of the new school fosters interdisciplinary communication and collaboration by positioning flexible design studios, labs, open offices and shared collaboration spaces across all five floors.

The completion of the capital campaign was made possible through more than 1,000 gifts from individual donors, corporations, and private foundations. The ICA, which will be free to the public when it opens in April 2018, has also launched an endowment campaign to ensure the sustained growth of the new institution, with an initial $12-million goal.

Upper Queen Street in Richmond, New Zealand by irving smith architects

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

Article source: irving smith architects

Big Box retail is increasingly placed away from New Zealand’s small town centres, taking the life and community vitality of the centre with it. The town of Richmond called big box retail back into the main street, questioning how to maintain streetscape and commercial viability to both large and small tenancies. Big Box can entail up to 100m lengths of uninterrupted walls to the street, a scale and typology seemingly incongruous with a greengrocer or a provincial NZ townscape.

These neighboring terrace homes are owned by two generations of one family. Both houses were in need of repair and update. HOUSE House is a single building that extends both homes. They are separate homes within one architecture. The new structure runs north/south while the original houses run east/west. The fence between each terrace slides away to create one large backyard.

VCU Adcenter in Richmond, Virginia by Clive Wilkinson Architects

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Article source: Clive Wilkinson Architects

VCU Adcenter in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the foremost media, advertising and communications schools in North America. In an effort to expand and broaden the educational prospectus, a new building was planned. A vacant historic three-storey brick carriage house from 1890 provided the main school teaching space, and this is supplemented with a new 12,000 SF three-storey ‘service structure’ located along side, which provides modern facilities and additional space on several levels, including seismic bracing of the old building.

With an innate love of Italy and its inimitable food – not to mention the fond childhood memories of visiting his local branch of PizzaExpress with his Italian grandmother fresh in his mind – Rogers jumped at the chance.
