Surrounded by constructions pertaining to Socialist architecture, the building stands out due to its contemporary features, illustrative of other times and different aspirations. By contrast, the neighbouring buildings, specific to communist architecture enhance the value of the building.
The architect Marcel Luchian will present the M House residential project from the town of Singera (Chisinau), Republic of Moldavia at the third edition of GIS Architecture Expo Conference.Marcel Luchian is the director of the architecture and design office Marcel Luchian Studio.
The project presents a philharmonic in Constanţa city, Romania. From a socio-demographic point of view, the city of Constanţa is the 3rd in the country as number of inhabitants and it is considered the city with the largest ethnic and cultural mix. The site proposed for our project is situated on the Eastern border of the Tăbăcăriei Lake, at the crossroads of two important areas of development: a touristic area and a local one, this being an important criterion in choosing the emplacement.
The park and terrace are situated in Bucharest, Romania, at Olimpia Sport Center. The owners wished to transform their common exterior space into a green open space, divided in two related major functions, where they can relax, walk or eat after sport training and after work. Total area of the project is aprox. 1000 sqm.
The appartment is located in a block of flats in Constanta, directly on the Romanian seacoast of the Black Sea.It was the priming intention of having a beautiful open space with a continuous “sea coast feeling”.The white colour is almost everywhere.A glass partition cut out the main sensation of “innocence” of the existing space, through its folding trace and through a special spectral film sticked directly on it.
Materials used and furniture: The flooring with solid epoxy coating, rough concrete pillars, glass partitions with 3M Radiant Color Film, the furniture consists most of translucent white MDF and Corian.
What could we do in the context of revitalizing architecture to keep a more vivid picture of an old building with (even partial) special features? It is a question to which we can respond in two ways. The valuable part – the special one – will be restored and the unworthy one we rebuild, complete, emphasize – in a first variant – absolutely in the same stylistic story as theold valuable one, or we dress it – in a second variant – in a completely new concept in major contrast with the existing situation.
In an absolutely amazing geographical setting, in a «spur» of the gulf referred to as the «Fishery», somewhere at Constanta’s northern limits towards Mamaia, where the strip of land between the sea and Ghiol lake is minimal, is located the «Spectrum» Residential Complex, proposed by us. In this land «spur», the placement of «sea guards» appeared as an absolutely extraordinary theme. Observing the place from the land and from the sea, I realized that the situations are somehow different.
This intervention must be related to the context: the communist architectural legacy from before 1989 in Romanian cities, the gray suburbs and neighborhoods with standardized blocks , the specific urban landscape of Europe’s former socialist bloc. Due to excessive standardization, many blocks of flats in Bucharest are identical with some of the apartment buildings in places located hundreds of miles away, indifferent to the socio-cultural specificity.
The idea of a school of music and arts in Bucharest came from the need to gather all the teachers and gifted children from the district and from other areas in a single dedicated place in order to study and communicate. Until now, children have studied in improvised places, in old schools that haven’t been built in accordance with the technical needs of these disciplines. The school is not a classical art one, but an institution with extra-curricular activities like music, theatre, dance, drawing, painting, graphics, sculpture, new media and performance of any kind.

This house is built on a 450 square meters lot, located on a former park in Bucharest. In order to preserve the rich vegetation of the park, as well as the general ambiance of the area, the architect and the beneficiary agreed to keep the highest possible number of the existing trees. As a result, three out of the four trees survived. They also determined the placing of the building, becoming determining factors, just like the general urban provisions.
