A new residential building up to 70 metres in height and including 114 apartments is added to the existing Ter Meulen shopping building in Rotterdam. This is an unusual project as the new building literally rests on the columns and foundations of the existing structure. The only additions are a pair of concrete lift shafts which also provide stability.
The number of cruise ships coming to Rotterdam and docking at the Cruise Terminal is increasing each year. To cope with this growth and associated baggage handling, TomDavid Architects have designed an industrial structure that brings together business and pleasure: a Pop Up Luggage Space (P.U.L.S.) with an elevated terrace providing stunning views over the river and of Rotterdam’s skyline.
In 2010 the former Kralings Museum at the Hoflaan was transformed into a luxury apartment building. The building consists of three apartments with a common entrance and a lift to the upper floors. The project Casa F involves the apartment on the second floor and contains 193 m2 with 25 m2 of outdoor space.
After a very fast construction period of only two months a spectaculair new pavilion shines in the heart of Rotterdam. Mei architects and planners designed this new McDonald’s pavilion on Coolsingel Rotterdam. The former kiosk was once voted the ugliest building in Rotterdam and no longer reflected the wishes and ambitions of either McDonald’s and the city of Rotterdam.

During the winter it is closed, but when the sun arrives the building transforms. The arrival of the spring is visible in the building: screens move up, doors slide open and the flags wave into the air. The building reacts on the summer sun.
The transformation of a very common 19th century Rotterdam upstairs apartment into an unique city paradise.
The residents, Bart Cardinaal en Nadine Roos, had been residents at this address since their student time. With the arrival of their daughter the rented apartment didn’t suffice any more and the residents were on the look out for a home with a (roof)garden. Then the opportunity came along to buy the house for a very good price and it also turned out that it was possible to rebuild the house drastically. As they have their own architectural and design firm, HUNK-design, this became the start of the transformation.
Large budgets and enormous amounts of energy are spent on the upgrading of major Dutch railway stations in Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam. The efforts at creating quality environments related to public transport should not be limited to the station building itself. By paying close attention to all public space surrounding the railway hubs, the promise of true Transport Oriented Development can be kept alive. Maxwan’s plans for Rotterdam Central District emphasize the quality of that public space.
The ‘Nieuwe Park Rozenburgschool’ is an elementary school in Rotterdam’s quarter Kralingen-Crooswijk with children from various ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds. The school has been spread over two locations within the district. With the extension of one of the locations all school facilities could be united again and help the school function as one institution.

For its latest completed project, Powerhouse Company has renovated an iconic Rotterdam office building. The architect started by turning the entrance into a crossover between a hotel lobby, restaurant and coffee bar.
