The owners’ sociability and openness laid the foundation of the design of this exceptionally open and integral room with a core that later becomes functional and useful. A giant eight meter long table stretches through the whole space and different functional areas. The lack of stepped storage space and moving large volumes below eye level adds more spaciousness to the apartment. The hierarchy of the materials plays its own role in creating contrast — between the large amounts of warm wooden colors and the neutral white, which is further subdued by the light wooden floor. The more private part of the apartment contains a bedroom, a bathroom and a multifunctional closet.
Contrast is integrated into the structure of the apartment. It shows the ambiguous and unstable condition of dark and light parts, while the body of the apartment remains intact. There is no actual feeling of contrast thanks to large dimensions and proportions weight. The dark parts represent depth, and the light ones produce expanse, which allows the inner space to balance its parts between each other. Lots of engineering requires ideal spaces.
The studio grew out of two small apartments that share the same concept of an open space with a fair and clear white color. The space has an axis with several areas of different functionality, which interconnect and seamlessly blend into one another. The sleeping area is partially separated from the living-room with its own couch.
The client, Yandex corporation, wanted to see this project as an office which would complement the already existing offices of the company located in Benois Business Centre. Accordingly, it is the second stage of offices on the 5th floor which was completed in 2012, and the first office on the 4th floor which was introduced into service in 2008. The mentioned office is located on the 4th floor, and the task was to connect it with the first stage office which has been in operation for a long time already.
It is indicative that this office is to some extent a return to the roots of cooperation of za bor architects and the largest Russian IT-corporation Yandex. The first office developed for Yandex by za bor architects is in the same building of the Benois business center in Saint Petersburg, but on a lower floor. In 2008 it was a brilliant premiere published by almost all the leading architecture and design media in Russia. The project has picked up many awards. Four years later za bor architects and Yandex had decided to repeat the success on a larger scale – Yandex Saint-Petersburg office II is almost twice as large as the previous one – it houses the entire fourth floor of the building and has a corridor about 200 meters long (total floor area 3310 sqm), but size doesn’t matter, clients wanted an «extraordinary office like no other»
Founded in 1865 Saint-Petersburg zoo is the oldest zoological park of Russia. As most of other parks across Russia, it suffers today from a cruel lack of space, being located in the heart of the historical town center. The city has hence decided to create a new zoo, which will range over 300 hectares, on the town’s outskirts, escaping this way the high population density of the urban area. The project preserves a large strech of land, and implements an environmentally beneficial approach.
