Mira Mesa High School in San Diego, California by Architects Mosher Drew

Saturday, July 23rd, 2022

Article source: Architects Mosher Drew

Traditional K-12 education buildings have created an entourage of partitioned structures promoting a single lecturer instruction style, and resulting in mostly isolated classrooms. Current teaching pedagogy has changed the architectural dynamic to reinforce information distribution, team collaboration, and ‘learn by doing.’ Teachers have assumed a role of ‘advisor’ or ‘guide’ to facilitate students’ efforts to research information and create their own knowledge base. A new classroom model should respond by facilitating creative, critical-thinking and communication skills enhanced by a group dynamic. Therefore, we believe the built environment must respond directly to the need for diversity and the collaborative spirit of education through design for flexibility, mobility, and dynamic learning.

PEAK LINE – Parametric Urban Planning in San Diego, California by SO/AP ARCHITECTS

Friday, March 4th, 2016

Article source: SO/AP ARCHITECTS

GENERAL DESIGN:

The bias of SO/AP agency was to design an urban pattern generated by tools for parametric programming. The urban grid, the study of heights and typology of housing are the optimized results from simulations between a 3D parametric design software, and software for environmental analysis.

All data as solar radiation, natural lighting condition, thermal performance and water consumption have been integrated to the urban design from the beginning.

A urban grid with 20/20m plots – 10m spaced -, is at first uniformly contorted to have the optimize pattern following the contour lines on slopping fields. The simulating of solar potential generates two progressive areas of highest building. It defined two urban attractive areas; each one will be specially focused on winter activities or summer activities.  A last parametric control working on plots morphology, define the optimized housing typology and zoning area.
