McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., (www.mccarthy.com) has completed construction of the 13,500-square-foot addition to the emergency department and trauma center at Scripps Mercy Hospital, located at 4077 Fifth Ave. in the Hill crest area of San Diego. Scripps Health officials recently dedicated the expanded facility, renaming it the “Conrad Prebys Emergency & Trauma Center” in honor of its largest donor.

Carlsbad High School students returned from their holiday break last week to find 11 brand new education buildings and a central plaza awaiting them. Located at 3557 Lancer Way in Carlsbad, Calif., the $47 million classroom complex was constructed by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., one of the nation’s leading education facility builders, on behalf of the Carlsbad Unified School District.
An introverted sculptural structure unfurling towards the ocean and the private courtyards within: a powerful dichotomy between intimacy and exposure. A design characterised by a formal tension between straight and curved surfaces and a dynamic roof gesture delineating the boundary between private and shared space. The brief called for a single family house located at the top of a residential area overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The new Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center, which was adapted from a former 17,460-square-foot auto dealership originally built in 1927, has officially received LEED-NC Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Located at the northeast corner of Fourth Avenue and Beech Street at 1525 Fourth Avenue, the once vacant building was fully restored to bring vibrant purpose to downtown San Diego, serving the region’s growing senior population.

Lately, for various reasons, there has been constant instability and uncertainty that has impeded generating a sporting culture in San Diego where support for the home team is part of the urban and social fabric of the city. The idea of the San Diego Chargers leaving to another location (most possibly LA) created a somber feeling amongst their fans. With that thought, DBRDS wanted to explore an architectural solution for a new stadium downtown that would capture the imagination of the City, the fans & the Chargers to be inspired to want to stay & forever belong in San Diego… to become an iconic fabric of people’s in this great City.
