Monday, April 10th, 2023

Article source: Floisand Studio Architects

Exposition Heights is a complete transformation of a 1,800-square-foot Seattle split-level into a two-story modern gable home. Despite a tight budget, the comprehensive remodel almost doubles the square footage of the original 1960s home, accommodates urban density challenges, and demonstrates how older homes can be adapted to meet the changing needs of their owners.

Saturday, April 8th, 2023

Article source: Floisand Studio Architects

Located across from Seattle’s popular Ballard Locks where Lake Union meets the Puget Sound Pagliacci Pizza’s newest location honors the legacy of a historic structure while demonstrating an appropriate path forward for future use. The original design is a heavy timber replica of a six-beam Haida house a traditional style of building by the Haida Tribe which opened in 1939 as a Native American curio shop before serving as a restaurant space starting in 1945. Today, the building has been thoughtfully reimagined for Seattle’s beloved pizza chain by the talented team at Floisand Studio Architects.

Article source: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

The new, expanded International Arrivals Facility (IAF) at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is now open. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) led the design team, replacing a 50-year-old arrivals facility with a dynamic structure nearly five times bigger, dramatically improving the passenger experience. The IAF comprises an aerial walkway the longest of its kind in the world a Grand Hall, and a secure corridor to increase the number of international-capable gates.

“This is an all-new welcome to our region and airport for an international traveler, and it’s a dramatic improvement,” says Lance Lyttle, Managing Director of SEA Airport. “Everything from the views out the windows, the iconic walkway, and the intuitiveness of the facility make this an exceptional customer experience.”

VAVA House in Seattle, Washington by Fivedot

Wednesday, January 12th, 2022

Article source: Fivedot

The design of the VAVA House emphasizes the creative ways families share space and help each other grow, learn, and play. Located in Seattle, Washington, the clients asked Fivedot to design a house that reinforced a connection to their neighbors and their new community. In response, the design team flipped the typical arrangement of a suburban house which normally is closed off in the front and more open to the rear. In contrast, the 3,643-square-foot home is designed to open onto an expansive front patio with multiple gathering areas which then cascades down to a small park across the street. A custom charpai (swing) anchors the covered front porch which also contains a firepit and a heater making it a true four-season space.

Central Area Backyard Cottage in Seattle, Washington by Fivedot

Sunday, July 11th, 2021

Article source: Fivedot

Located in Seattle’s Central Area neighborhood, this home is an L shaped plan that creates a courtyard accessible from both the living area and the bedroom. Large sliding glass doors allow the living area to ‘steal’ the outside and appear much larger than it actually is. The home is designed to be on one level, both for aging in place needs as well as to allow for higher ceilings which create a more spacious feel. As the entry is from the alley, Fivedot created an entry courtyard to extend and soften the entry sequence. The garage serves as an object implying the edge of the courtyard and creating an outdoor room as well as providing space for outdoor gear and the other parts of life that don’t fit into 800-square-feet.

Central Area Home in Seattle, Washington by Fivedot

Monday, May 31st, 2021

Article source: Fivedot

A renovation of a 1950’s era home into a gathering space for a custom furniture maker, an architect, their family, and friends. The existing home was an 825-square-foot bungalow on a large corner lot. While the original house was small, the property had a lot of potential for an addition as well as a large garden. Over the years, the garden flourished and the owners decided to build an addition to provide more space for their growing family and create a courtyard that backed up to the garden.
