Monday, February 15th, 2021

Article source: L’EAU design

“Cocooning phenomenon” is a term made by German Social Psychologist S. Popcon, and it stands for the habit of silkworm hiding inside a cocoon and protecting it-self from the outside. As modern society gets complicated, people pursue the intimate comfort of oneself through a slightly enclosed place than excessively exposed exterior activities.

Magok Hive in Seoul, South Korea by In-cheurl Kim + Archium

Monday, November 9th, 2020

Article source: In-cheurl Kim + Archium

The structural format from the “Magok Hive” is the same as “Urban Hive”, which is own designed in 2008. By combining columns and beams diagonally, it created a structural wall in which the flow of gravity came down straight and removed the gap between the stress lines. When a glass-wall that divides the interior is separated from the structural wall, the structural wall can be an exterior skin. This method is based on the principle from the Korean traditional building, “Hanok”. In the case of “Hanok”, there are the exterior skins behind the wooden structure. It can be applied at modern structural system, reinforced concrete.

Head:the first art and photography museum in the world which has  taken a picture by itself!

Turkish Architect Öznur Pınar Çer’s firm MASK Architects has designed ‘’ The First Art and Photograpy Museum in the World which has taken a picture by itself in Seoul. Named ‘’ The First Camera Obscura Photographic Art Museum ‘’, we can think about this installation in a simple and fun way: it is the museum itself, with its roof-top camera and pinholes in exhibition rooms, who are taking a picture of the present skyline of Seoul and showing it to the visitor.

The biggest camera on planet earth is in seoul!

Isn’t the purpose of a Photography Museum to celebrate Photography? So why not create the biggest camera on planet Earth and celebrate the art of photography and the city of Seoul with an installation of a rooftop ‘Camera Obscura’ that marries past, present, and future into an experience that visitors will never forget. Photography makes our memories valuable, fixing them for a moment, while life keeps rolling rapidly in time. From digital to analogical, from microscopic pictures to satellite images, Photography has bee n freezing those fleeting moments. And, before all that, there was what we can call the grandmother of Photography, the ‘Camera Obscura.’ And it is to this origin that we want to come back to present the first innovation of the camera properties and give both locals and tourists a landmark experience that will provide Seoul with the Biggest Camera on Planet Earth. Our installation will also boost the city’s economy and tourism flow, as visitors from all around the world, and all ages and profession, come to participate in Seoul’s vibrant cultural scene and have the Museum’s as one of the main incentive s for their visit.

Community Node : Third Place

Cities are connected to various functions such as the square, architecture, and space through diverse paths. Social relationships are generated by the nodes between these paths and elements (e.g., square, architecture, and space). Multi-layered social spaces trigger diverse new relationships from the users who utilize community facilities. Multi-layered social spaces include the circular flow of human traffic made of a circular ring structure, places where social relationships are generated such as culture square or green bridge, places that do not refine actions such as convergence garden, and relationship space, which can be public or private depending on the location and characteristics of it.

Saemoonan Church in Seoul, South Korea by Seoinn Design Group

Monday, January 13th, 2020

Article source: Seoinn Design Group

Established as the first Korean protestant church, Saemoonan Church constructed a new church on Sinmunno, Gwanghwamun, celebrating its 132nd anniversary. The shape resembles a mother’s arms stretched out toward the sky. At the time of the design competition in 2010, the Korean Christian community had put functionalism as a top priority strategy for church construction, and many large churches were showing off their existence on a large scale. However, Saemoonan Church proposed four distinct church construction themes as basic guidelines; ¨ç the historicity as the mother church of Korean protestant churches, ¨è the symbolism of doors open to heaven ¨é the spatiality of expressing Christ as light, and ¨ê presenting a water space as a meaning of baptism and harmony. Hence, we adapted the themes with Loving God and Loving Neighbors and included them in the design. Loving God was mainly portrayed through the use and symbolism of the space, and the aspects of Loving Neighbors were expressed with the publicness through the external appearance and layout effect of the building that are revealed in the city center.
