As a luxurious mansion built for 21st Century living, Mandarin Court (Jiu Jang Tang) villas have inherited the spirit of traditional Chinese courtyard residences, which is most vividly expressed in their spatial articulation, interplay of light and spaces, and the subtlety in material usage. Yet, despite the strong cultural resonance, the design of the villas has rejected outright on any revivalist gesture or pastiche symbolism. Instead, an uncompromisingly modern and unpompous approach has been taken to honestly reflect the times where the buildings belong.
The project aims to restore and refurbish Mings Café, a building located in the outskirts of Shanghai. To take advantage of its exceptional location –facing a lake and embraced by nature–, the owner decided to revitalize the venue through the application of a new design concept. In June 2015, LATITUDE got commissioned to explore the renovation strategy that would redefine this building’s identity. Our tasks covered from interior refurbishment to the redesign of outdoor areas such as the terrace, the façade and the surrounding landscape.
The ‘Modular Lilong’ was designed for Value Retail China to showcase ‘Chuang x Yi’; a concept brand that provides a platform for Chinese fashion designers. The 150 sqm site is located in Yioulai Shanghai Village; a sister to Bicester Village in London – both global shopping developments. The intent of ‘Chuang x Yi’ is to create a retail experience specifically related to the context of Shanghai.
The conceptual design for shanghai is a theoretical exercise in thematic processes, an investigation into architectural language as a lexical device governed by thematic parameters and syntactical structures. The lexicon is rather a series of architectural devices and tectonics composed as an interface for a subject and object experiencer. These tectonics thread through an arrangement of digital art and light sculptures as a syntax of meaning and definition to the overarching architecture. The correlation between lexical properties and syntactic structures are modes of operation in which the architecture emerges. Meaning and experience are not limited by surface and material association; but when art and technology are introduced, the system of thematic structure becomes visible in its lexical and syntax relationship. The art work in the form of digital projection, light sculpture, and diverse mediums perform as aspectual properties, unlike the thematic tectonic shapes and form. They become interface entities; these entities are mediators between spaces and the architectural body. The subject experiencer correlates the differences in the art and tectonic expression, but the event in which these entities project are undefined allowing emergence in activity to develop and operate.
Early architecture was built maybe merely to accommodate people. As time changes, city breath permeates into architecture and stamps them with urbanization. Just like the old residential buildings in shanghai.

Bolon is one of the world’s largest spectacles manufacturers and China’s best-known sunglasses brand. The Bolon brand is positioned as a premium lifestyle brand in this segment. The main advertising campaign, revolving around French actress Sophie Marceau, evokes French elegance and fashion consciousness. Our new store design offers a clear spatial interpretation of this attitude. Unique spatial elements that retell a narrative, such as iconographic shelves and a polished gold ceiling, vividly illustrate the brand’s realigned public image as a self-confident market leader.
