This project at Shanghai’s latest landmark development challenged Kokaistudios to design and install a flexible bistro, bar, and art shop a top Thomas Heatherwick’s centrepiece building for Bund Finance Center. Cloud Bistro takes full advantage of the address’ prestigious location on the western bank of the city’s Huangpu River: housed inside a glass pavilion, it affords spectacular views across the city. Sensitive to the architecture’s existing aesthetic, the venue marks a near-seamless extension of Shanghai’s newest icon, bringing with it multiple possibilities for customization and events.
A major mixed-use development connecting Shanghai’s commercial heart to its old town, Bund Finance Center’s landmark architecture has fast become a Shanghai icon. Called upon to design interiors for the project’s mall, the project marks Kokaistudios a return to the city’s historic Bund, where in 2006 they led the renovation of UNESCO Heritage Award-winning Bund 18.
The project is located on a narrow site, facing the road to the north and water to the south, in Xinhe Town, Chongming island, Shanghai. Three buildings in different volumes will be refurbished into a new communal cultural center, while some traces of previous usage being kept in its existing layout.
Building One on the west side was previously a supply and marketing cooperative in the 80s, partially three-story flat roof and parallel to the road.
In a second project for Réel in Shanghai, a high-end shopping mall located on West Nanjing Road, Kokaistudios was commissioned to renovate and upgrade its third floor contemporary womenswear department. On identifying visibility and layout as particular challenges of the 500sqm space, designers injected layers and partitions into the formerly messy shop floor to create rhythm and pace, and invite discovery. Combining a solid core, mineral-inspired PVC, as well as brushed stainless steel finishes, all realized in neutral tones to best showcase the products themselves, the result fits seamlessly within the mall’s wider context, creating continuity and refinement.
Visibility was a key challenge: with sole access to the floor via central escalators, visitors could see the entirety of the space immediately on arrival. With views through to the dead end beyond, as well as each and every tenant island in between, the original layout offered little in the way of intrigue, few incentives for discovery, and limited possibilities for circulation.
