Sincere Property, MVRDV and Aedas have started construction on a Central Business District at Shanghai’s mostly domestic airport Hongqiao. The 4.5ha site is located near Hongqiao Airport train station at the corner of Shenhai Express Way and Shenbin Road. The plan comprises ten office towers, an underground shopping centre, cultural program, parking and a sunken plaza which will bring a more intimate form of urban life into an area currently dominated by large boulevards and urban expressway’s. The project’s completion is planned for 2015.
Just weeks after winning the competition, construction has already started on this urban master plan for an office and retail centre near the fourth busiest airport in mainland China. The 4.5ha site is divided into a small northern plot of 8,409 m2 and a larger southern plot. The team won the competition with highly energy-efficient architecture combined with an intimate urban plan which allows for pedestrian-friendly spaces.
This command takes place on the north of the Zhangjiang district in Pudong. It’s along the future trade route site. It includes 36,000 m2 of shops and facilitys. The context here is nonexistent, except for the presence of a river bordering the project, which leads to a “technology park”.
The fluid form of the buildings come from the river and from the futur energy of the site. A long ribbon of LED visually unifies all the programs along the road. This is a screen of 800 m length perfect for reading in the car which provide a technological showcase.
Kik Park is a leftover urban area that Francesco Gatti is surprised to see has escaped being built-up and which is positioned at the entrance to the Kic Village, constructed in recent years for the students at the nearby universities of Fudan and Tongji. Since 2005 when the Italian architect transferred part of his professional activities to China he has recurrently been interested in the possibility of designing interstice spaces – as in the case of the In Factory JingAn Six Loft Buildings (2006), where the outside areas of the redevelopment project were treated on a par with a residential and work environment.
At beginning of 2011, Kokaistudios was invited by one of the leading developers in China, OCT Shanghai Land, to lead a thorough restoration and renovation project of a historically significant warehouse on the North side of Suzhou Creek in Shanghai. The warehouse; the early 20th Century Ewo Packing Factory warehouse building; is the first building to open in the new large scale OCT urban re-development project SUHE CREEK designed by Foster+Partners and where the 4th Bvlgari Hotel will be located. The building now serves initially as the Project Showroom, Sales Center and VIP Reception Venue as well as housing the studios for two of China’s most prominent contemporary artists, Yan Peiming and Liu Xiaodong. It will be part of the riverside commercial space where international brands will be located in the future.
The Hongqiao Vantone SunnyWorld Centre, a major new sustainable masterplan for a prominent site at the heart of the Shanghai Hongqiao CBD, has broken ground – the project forms part of a large-scale urban plan, extending from Shanghai’s main station. The dynamic new mixed-use community is centred on a new four-hectare public park and brings together highly efficient, flexible office buildings, animated at ground level by shops, restaurants and a range of new civic spaces.
Men distort and bend reality in order to maintain their face. Enhancing our image places us higher on imaginary scale of public opinion. Monotone grayness is covered by fancy facade, pretending to be special, but still empty on the inside. Monoculture fields of unified hi-rise offer forced equality to everyone.
It is in the human nature to shape their surroundings. We adapt it to suit our needs, to identify. But we can also ADOPT the surrounding as it is, give it a new meaning. We create a temporal city, one that changes in time and space. Let’s use empty capacity, and offer it for inhabitation. The city is a result of our will. Do not be afraid to use it as it was never intended to be used.
This was an international design competition that me and my partner(Justin Strosnider) participated in during the fall of 2011 and spring of 2012. we are both 18 years of age and pursuing a career in architecture. The design work took a total of six months and was the most extensive and challenging design we had ever done. The main goal of the design was sustainability. The building is a mixed use building that offeres retail, office, as well as residential space.
