Fuqiang elementary school is designed to support new ways of learning to feed Shenzhen’s growing thirst for creative talent and innovation to feed its rapidly expanding economy.
To inspire curiosity and passion for exploration the school is designed around the idea of ‘hybrid space’. Space takes on the role of the ‘third teacher’ and functions as an integral part of student’s education. Different programs and activities are juxtaposed together in three dimensions to offer new connections across different levels. For example standard classrooms, special classrooms, and the athletic field are adjacent to one another to support cross-disciplinary interaction. Students in the library on the first floor can look down into performances in the theater and activities in the gym in the basement level.
Situated in the Nanyou district in central Nanshan area, the Zhongtai Residential Development consists of a 5-storey podium and above it a 33-storey residential building providing 238 units. On account of the site’s lack of pleasant greenery, the design’s primary objective is to inject vitality and improve the urban interface.
‘The premise is to create an urban oasis, so the project will be a locus of calm and respite in the fast-growing city,’ explains Cary Lau, Aedas Global Design Principal.
The aim of this project is to enable a new generation of parents and kids to pull away from the busy city life and enter an imaginative parent-child world. The concept of this composite family space is “Valley of Dreams” which includes integrated functions of play, learning, dining and socializing.
Situated in an independent building in Shenzhen Nanshan Park, the characteristics of the double height volume was fully expressed with newly built mezzanine levels to create vertical extension and spatial excitement for kid’s self-exploration. The whole environment was totally made of curves to break the rigidity of the building periphery boundary and seamlessly connect all activity zones situated at the 3 different levels. To follow the curvilinear tectonics, an abstract landscape of valley’s seasonal changes was mimicked in provoking kid’s imaginations. The overall design language is a strategic manipulation of symbolic colors, shapes, scales and tactility to fulfill functional and emotional requirements of a play-scape and gave memorable experience for kids and parents.
As the forefront of the New Special Economic Zone, Qianhai continues the innovative characteristics of Shenzhen for more than 20 years of reform and opening up, carries the unique Marine culture as the core internal driving power, and demonstrates the innovative and inclusive urban spirit. The customer experience center for BMW is located at the junction of Zhenhai Road and Gangcheng Road in Qianhai Cooperation Zone, Shenzhen. Taking into account both the hot and humid environment and conforming to the spirit of the city, the designers reinterpreted the existing building based on the design principle of sustainable development.

MVRDV has completed construction of the Idea Factory, a transformation of a former factory building in the Shenzhen urban village of Nantou that sustainably reusing and improving the building instead of demolishing and rebuilding it. The project contains a mixture of offices for the Urban Research Institute of China Vanke and offices for rent – yet despite this programme, its distinguishing features are public in nature: a stairway cuts its way through the six-storey building, leading to a rooftop with a series of “rooms” enclosed by living bamboo “walls”, offering a variety of amenities and activities.
This is a kindergarten reconstruction and expansion project, located in the first residential community built in Shenzhen in the 1980s. On the north side of the base is a preserved old building with a very irregular outline, and on the south side there are a group of residential blocks very close to the site.
