Essence Financial Building in Shenzhen, China by OMA

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

Article source: OMA

Shenzhen’s Futian CBD is developing at a frenetic speed. The last 100 years of development in building styles are condensed into a mere decade. Populated by a range of office towers of different generations, the city is ready for the next leap forward from a manufacturing city into a services hub. A brand new generation of office towers concomitant with another rapid transformation calls for a moment of unruffled consideration about the way forward: how the emergent forces in business and society could shape a contemporary office tower typology…

OCT Design Museum in Shenzhen, China by Studio Pei-Zhu

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Article source: Studio Pei-Zhu

The inspiration for the project comes from both the location being close to the bay and from the needs of the program, a surreal space for design exhibitions. The Oct design museum focuses mainly on fashion shows, product design, and conceptual automotive shows. The goal was to create a space that is surreal to the subject matter but also transcendental in surrounding and feeling. The design of the interior relies on a continuous white curving surface that casts no shadows and has no depth.

Bug Dome in Shenzhen, China by the WEAK!

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Article source: the WEAK!

The building is realized on a wasteland of a ruined building site in-between the Shenzhen City Hall and an illegal workers camp. The design is inspired by insects. The bamboo construction methods are based on local knowledge from rural Guanxi brought into the city by the migrating construction workers.

The space is used during the SZHK Biennale for underground bands, poetry reading, discussions, karaoke and as a lounge for the illegal workers from the neighboring camp. The building offers a shade, a stage and a fireplace. After the Biennale the Bug Dome will act as an un-official social club for illegal workers from the Chinese countryside.
