We might don’t know whether the parallel world exists or not, but if it does exist, we’re not sure it is completely parallel to our world, or it is mirrored or rotated. The Netflix TV series Stranger Things, and the film Inception which came out strikingly many years ago, gave us some new perspective to realize and explore the world and provided us with diverse inspiration.
This time, the client came to us giving a brief of building a unique house without losing the basic needs of a three-person family. After investigation, we found that the house is located in Bantian, Shenzhen, a newly booming zone. Due to high price of real estate, the house’s original layout turned out small but complex and “multifunctional”, in other words, it was divided as a mess. Therefore, the core problem was how to improve the quality of life with tightly integrated spaces and enjoyable aesthetic feelings.
Overlooking Quanhai Bay and the South China Sea, Bao’an Cultural Complex is a masterplan of buildings that create a new public campus for the city while mediating between the coastal landscape and the more densely developed commercial areas further inland. The 110,000-square-meter scheme—which includes a library, cultural centre, as well as a performing arts venue—won an invited international competition. The Library and the Youth Palace and Cultural Centre were completed as part of the first phase. An additional performing arts centre is currently under construction and will complete in 2020, finishing the development.

Once in south China’s Shenzhen, Peninsula Education Group (Peninsula) came forward with a visionary idea of creating a new learning space to help foster the next generation. Peninsula felt the necessity to build a magical place that belongs to children themselves. They believed that a novel and free environment is essential for children to learn new things actively and develop their social skills. One day, among the wild forest of the Whale Mountain, Peninsula had found the perfect place to make this new learning space a reality.
After 30 years of fast urban growth, Shenzhen has achieved the size of a world-class metropolis. At this point, the city is searching for new models for urban and architectural innovation to replace the traditional model of large-scale indoor shopping malls and focus on flexible development. The new Kang Qiao Jia Cheng development will provide an urban regeneration paradigm that is welcoming at street level as well as an imposing icon that fits Shenzhen’s skyline.
A new multifunctional high-rise complex including the 258 m high Shenzhen North Station Huide Tower is currently being built on behalf of Shenzhen Metro Group Co., Ltd. and China Railway Group Ltd. according to plans by HPP. The facility will be completed at the end of 2019 and is already shaping the skyline of Longhua District. As a transit-oriented development (TOD), a multifunctional and dense, mixed-use urban building block with offices and hotels in the Huide Tower, an additional 100 m high tower intended as an apartment building and the 36 m high common base zone with public use and commercial units will be built within walking distance of the Shenzhen North Station public transport hub. The new building ensemble connects public spaces and the Sky Gardens in the towers to form a vertical urban quarter.
Shenzhen, a young and energetic creative capital, a trend leader who has surpassed itself in constant innovation, has never missed talents coming with dreams. Blessed with convictions and dreams, Sunac-Smart Valley is located in the center of the city, upholding the care and original intentions of the early days of the heart and aiming to build the “South China Top Entrepreneurship Silicon Valley” with the goal of building a sense of space for the future.
Over the past thirty years, the population of Shenzhen has exploded from 300,000 to 1,400,000 people. It is unique among Chinese cities in that sixty-five percent of these residents are in their twenties and thirties, giving it a powerful new energy. The MIXC(Shenzhen Bay) commercial complex is located in a development area facing Shenzhen Bay where hotels, residences, sports facilities, and office buildings are clustered. We designed the 2,475 m2 bookstore on the third floor of this complex, called Yan.
The store’s Chinese name is pronounced “quianyan.” “Yan” is the word for the decorative outer edges of eves on traditional Chinese buildings, which symbolize the East’s extension into the broader world. The owners of the bookstore chose this name because it represents their forward-looking vision of being at the leading edge of culture. The second part of the name, “Think Borderless, Discover Yourself” expresses the shop’s identity as a place for endless self-discovery.

To the west of the city center, at the bay of Shenzhen, a new business district known as Super Bay City is being developed. The urban zoning plan for the area between the bay and the Beizhoushan Wetland Park specifies a high-density urban quarter. In future, a broad north-south axis referred to as Central Park will link the oceanfront park with the wetlands to the north and include landscaping, plazas, and cultural facilities. In the block structure of the masterplan, the China Telling Communications Building occupies the north-east corner plot at the interface between Central Park and the wetland park.
The project is a retrofitted apartment located in Houhai Area, Shenzhen, China. The original space reflected the client's affection for Chinese-style design and wooden furniture. As approaching the project, AD ARCHITECTURE intended to break through the traditional design aesthetics and the sense of massiveness. The designers strove to incorporate contemporary elements into the design, inject a Zen ambience into the space in a logic manner, as well as deconstruct and reorganize spatial elements, so as to generate an austere and elegant Oriental aesthetic and showcase the contemporary concept of “affordable luxury”. In addition, they brought integrated smart home system, light control system, constant temperature, humidity and oxygen control system and as well as noise-free system into the space, aiming to provide a healthy and quality living environment.
Situated on a high floor of a residential building, the apartment enjoys a panoramic view of the nearby Sihai Park. Living in this space is a peaceful, graceful, comfortable and relaxing experience.
Futian is one of the oldest and densest districts of Shenzhen. Recent urban regeneration efforts aim to breathe new life into this urban centre, which lacks urban quality and is crowded with residential and commercial high-rises.
The new Civic Cultural Centre plays a major role in this effort and will house cultural programme and social spaces for stimulating urban activity. Public life in Shenzhen, as in other subtropical cities, thrives in semi-open spaces. Our proposal is therefore a building that breathes: open to daylight and natural cooling breezes, and filled with greenery.
