Asia Art Archive in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong by LAAB Architects

Making space for books, people, and everything in between

A non-profit organization of art and culture, the Asia Art Archive is a platform for new ideas of art, centering particularly peripheral art knowledge and histories that have been historically sidelined. As AAA’s collection and public programs continue to grow, LAAB is very happy to be part of the team to help rethink its expansion at the same location. Just as how AAA has made space for knowledge and people, LAAB envisions this new home to be an open, inclusive, and nurturing place that makes space for books, people, and everything in between.

Yakinikumafia in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong by Bean Buro

The Brief: ‘Ride It Out’

Bean Buro was tasked with the design of Yakinikumafia on Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, a restaurant brand from Japan specialised in high-quality yakiniku (“grilled meat”). The floor space is situated in a vibrant district in the heart of the city, where there is a mixture of residents, tourists and office workers. The neighbourhood of Sheung Wan especially has a strong characteristic of art, antiques, nightlife and restaurants. The restaurant would have booth seating where food can be cooked directly at each booth, a standing bar in front of an open kitchen where chefs can serve the customers directly, as well as a couple of VIP rooms for exclusive in-room cooking parties and function events. The restaurant was designed and constructed throughout the lockdown. It opened just as the city began to ease its restrictions. The client’s ethos was to ride out the contextual challenges, entice new customers and support the communities of farmers and producers.

Ibis Hong Kong Central & Sheung Wan Hotel, a catchy, colourful icon strategically located in the bustling Sheung Wan, is only within minutes away from many of the transportation networks as well as Hong Kong Central’s business and shopping hub.  The Hotel, housed with 550 modern, boldly simplistic guestrooms, a restaurant and a bar, boasts one of the first Asian flagships to showcase a brand new vibrant style, bringing in comfort, well-being and caring service.

The hotel exterior and outlook is eye-catching which stands out in Sheung Wan area where Hong Kong heritage prevails.  The hotel exterior is set to be a new landmark and icon in the Sheung Wan district, an interesting streetscape to blend in both modernity and heritage of Hong Kong whilst enlivening Sheung Wan as an up-and-coming tourist area.

Tracing back the story in the 1920s Sheung Wan, the façade design reflects the historical streetscape of Hong Kong: the rectangular tenement houses in repetitive order, collage of huge advertising signage in multi-colours, forming a uniform but dynamic streetscape, A City of Mosaic.

The hotel exterior is set to be a new landmark and icon in the Sheung Wan district, an interesting streetscape to blend in both modernity and heritage of Hong Kong whilst enlivening Sheung Wan as an up-and-coming tourist area. It fully echoes with the Hotel being featured as one of Asian ibis flagships in terms of its hotel scale and benchmark of the hotel branding.
