Plaster Fun House in Torrensville, South Australia by Sans-Arc Studio

Wednesday, January 29th, 2020

Article source: Sans-Arc Studio

The Plaster Fun House has two main conceptual inspirations. Firstly, the clients’ love of Art Deco and P & O style Architecture. Secondly, their style and taste and their extensive collection of unique Italian and Czech glassware and German Pottery. The clients wanted a space that was fun, full of light and compact.

Spatially, we spliced the existing residence. The cottage already housed a good sized dining room, which was integrated into the extension by running a singular kitchen island/dining table through the two spaces. The existing bathroom was expanded and a laundry added adjacent.

The brief called for a low maintenance dwelling (used in the first instance as a weekend retreat and later to become a permanent dwelling) that would engage with its great location.  It is in a highly corrosive environment 250 metres from breaking surf.  The southern (rear) boundary of the site abuts a coastal reserve containing primary, secondary and tertiary dunes.  The house has been sited to maximise its relationship and connection to this wonderful dune landscape and the external materials chosen will weather to reflect the exposure of the site.
