When the apartment on Heleneborgsgatan in Stockholm, Sweden was for sale in 2012 it had been used as furniture storage for 30 years. The previous owner had begun a renovation in the 1980s but fell ill and the apartment was left untouched until his death. Time had been frozen; wallpaper was half removed, only a few tiles and a kitchen faucet were sticking out of a wall, there was no electricity and a bathroom only with signs of rats as inhabitants.
Stockholm’s many islands has created a beautiful city to live in but it has also created barriers between the inner city and the suburbs. Large scale bridges connects many of these places to each other, often built with the car in mind.
Tranebergsbron is one of the most beautiful bridges in Stockholm and connects the city island Kungsholmen with the western suburbs. It was completed in 1934, at that time having the world’s largest bridge vaults in concrete.
The multi-storey housing complex, designed for Stockholm’s new Hagastaden quarter, is intended to be a landmark in the new quarter, as well as an attractive destination for Stockholm’s residents. Together with four other planned buildings, the multi-storey complex will be part of Norrtull, an attractive new public area of the city.
A mix of new-built and a transformation of an existing brick office building, formerly occupied by TekniskaNämdhuset, part of the City of Stockholm, the idea behind the proposal is to retain a large proportion of the existing structure, and add a slab building and two smaller point blocks between the former office wings – a solution which, together with the jetty and new terraced stairs facing the water, opens up the buildings to their surroundings and creates a new, recreational meeting place in central Stockholm.
For the Västerbroplan plot in the Marieberg district, Berg | C.F. Møller has drawn up plans for a 34-floor wooden apartment building. The building is designed around a wooden structure with stabilising concrete cores.
Pillars and beams will be constructed using solid and cross-laminated timber and inside the apartments floors, ceilings and window frames will be made from wood, allowing the material to also be visible from the outside through the large windows. Wood is the natural choice when it comes to materials for innovative residential development: It is an environmentally friendly and durable material which creates a comfortable and healthy indoor climate and, surprisingly enough, also constitutes a very efficient protection against fire.
Belatchew Arkitekter presents STRAWSCRAPER, the first project to come out of the newly established Belatchew Labs. STRAWSCRAPER is an extension of Söder Torn on Södermalm in Stockholm with a new energy producing shell covered in straws that can recover wind energy. What was supposed to become a building of 40 flights became 26. Söder Torn on Södermalm in central Stockholm was finalized 1997, but the architect Henning Larsen had already left the contract after having lost influence over the design of the tower.
Developed by Spacescape, Airport City Stockholm, in cooperation with Swedavia Swedish Airports (state), Sigtuna municipality, and Arlandastad Holding (private real estate), has a new urban design strategy and urban plan that envisions a unique airport city which emphasizes urban qualities and places sustainability in focus. Such rapid expansion has placed distinct demands on planning, which has resulted in this collaborative effort. Creating these foundations, along with offering the world within walking distance, will increase value and attract even more people and businesses. Project: Airport City Stockholm Urban Design Strategy Proposal
‘Stockholm City Station’ will mark the entrance to Stockholm’s inner city center and integrates the station, a hotel and conference center along with apartments. The main idea behind the design was to create a building that gently adjusts to the area’s existing building in scale and expression, and which reinterprets a number of local Swedish design traditions.
The L’Oreal Group is the world’s largest cosmetics and beauty company. With its registered office in Paris and head office in the Paris suburb of Clichy, Hauts-de-Seine, France, it has developed activities in the field of cosmetics. Concentrating on hair colour, skin care, sun protection, make-up, perfumes and hair care, the company is active in the dermatological, tissue engineering and pharmaceutical fields and is the top nanotechnology patent-holder in the United States.
Towards the end of the 19th century, every self-respecting city erected what it considered to be its biggest and best hotel. It was usually named Grand Hotel and was more often than not paid for out of the private pockets of wealthy barons. These hotels are often still in use today and have a charm that maybe only a century-old ideal of quality can give.
