BKM – Bündner Kunst museum in Chur, Switzerland by Barozzi / Veiga

Wednesday, January 25th, 2017

Article source: Barozzi / Veiga

The extension of the Villa Planta, which will accommodate the Bündner Kunstmuseum, is an exercise of integration within an urban ensemble. Despite the stringent limitations of the plot, the design strives to minimize its exterior volume by inverting the program’s logical order. Hence, a new public space is generated that incorporates the garden that surrounds the Villa and is integrated with the gardens of the nearby buildings.

Montreux Jazz Heritage Lab 2 in Switzerland by EPFL+ECAL Lab with ALICE

Saturday, January 14th, 2017

Article source: mint LIST

The Montreux Jazz Heritage Lab 2 is a research program at the crossroads between architecture, design and technology. The program is led by the EPFL+ECAL Lab in close collaboration with the architectural lab ALICE, at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), one of the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology.

This new permanent and immersive installation is hosted within the new campus building designed by the architect Kengo Kuma, and situated just next to the Montreux Jazz Café. Rather than mimicking the past, the project leads the audience on a unique journey through 50 years of history and 5.000 hours of audiovisual recordings made at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Visitors truly feel that they are live on stage with Ella Fitzgerald, standing beside Miles Davis’ trumpet, or composing Smoke on the Water together with Deep Purple.

The renovation project of the FTI foundation’s headquarters in the heart of Geneva’s industrial urban fabric was undertaken following two primary objectives:

On one hand, the need to activate a collaborative culture amongst the different departments, based on a transversal project dynamic, and on the other hand the need to propose a renewed and coherent client experience in line with the foundation’s values. The users were involved in a participatory co-design process from the start, helping to shape a common vision and to create an optimal user experience.

The challenge of this project was to integrate a large program on a relatively narrow plot while maintaining usable outdoor surfaces. An additional concern, was that the access to the plot being from the south, a solution had to be found to manage an entrance while ensuring privacy for the indoor and outdoor spaces.
