The single-family house integrates into the steep topography of the lot. The basement floor contains the garage. The entrance area and ancillary rooms are placed in the ground floor. The upper floor is used as the actual living and sleeping area.
As part of a two steps project’s competition organized in 2010 for the new library of the city of Spiez, the jury awarded the first place to the “Buchwert” project (“book-treasure”, word game of the term « book value ») designed by ‘bauzeit architekten’ office in Biel.
A two-family house is a building with a wall that divides it into two halves. The dividing wall is the only wall in the entire house. It cannot be crossed anywhere. It has to fulfill functions conventionally assigned to several architectural elements. It is the load bearing structure and the installation core, its folds define all of the rooms and it determines how the view from the entirely glazed building is divided between the two living units. The simplicity of the concept, the reduction of the architecture to a single element, creates substantial dependence and, in turn, makes the building very complex. It is only through that dependence that the wall acquires a compelling and cogent character although, in itself, it can follow any chosen course.
The New Building of the World Health Organization (WHO) will replace a number of temporary buildings at the Headquarters site in Genève. The New Building will be one of three buildings that comprise the WHO Headquarters. The Main Building, designed by Bernard Tschumi, will continue to be the primary representation of the WHO.
It is in the very special geography of the Swiss Jura, near the Lac de Joux (which freezes over in Winter), close to the ski slopes, hiking trails and bike routes where the R. family wished to settle. It is in this very special universe that the architects designed a singular space in response to the location and needs of the family by establishing strong relationships between inner spaces and territory.
EGG project was an order from a client full of restlessness – OJ.
OJ acquired a sculpture, called ‘Seed’, of the contemporary Portuguese artist Rui Chafes. The piece built in iron finds its purpose in the universality of OJ’s mind that seeks values such as origin, purity and universal mystery.
In a second stage, OJ threw us the challenge to design and build a space to receive and expose the ‘Seed’, promoting a deep reflection between Art and Architecture. The designed space is in the basement of his home in Fideris, located in the Swiss Alps.
Architecture firm ROK – Rippmann Oesterle Knauss* has completed the first five solar-powered bus stops for the town Meilen close to Zurich, Switzerland. The design incorporates site-specific information, based on the rich cultural and historic background of Meilen through perforated panels.
The City of Bernex is located in the urban ring of Geneva. Under the pressure of real estate development, it is undergoing expansion and evolving its status as a city from a place with rural character into an urban area.
The new city hall building completes the administrative center of Bernex. It creates with the two existing buildings, a public plaza. This space is dedicated to organizing numerous activities such as official ceremonies, markets, festivals, and so on.
A unique moment in history occurred in Switzerland in the first decades of the 20th century. Following a larger search for utopia enhanced by the industrial revolution, a fantastic creative community gathered on the hills of Monte Verità in the Ticino region.
Within the austerity of Jean Calvin’s protestant city, a tiny “nest” for living can be found. Hidden among the molasses sandstones that typify Geneva’s old town, the small apartment attempts to bring colours to the otherwise cavy and intricate architecture of the XVth century. The apartment has been conceived as a place for intimacy, with some slightly voyeuristic features that help bringing a sparkling feeling and natural light into the deep layout. The visual continuity that crosses the apartment from one façade to the other is set through an important interior window linking the bedroom with the kitchen and the living room. Everything can be seen and observed in one glance.
