As the scene blurs into a swirl and time gradually reverses back to the sweet old days, the song New York, New York by Frank Sinatra faded in to this vintage site of Yangmingshan, Taipei, where many US soldiers shared their memories of the 70’s Cold War Era. Far away from home, these warriors temporarily resided in this place; none of them knew if they could get back home again. This place was their only shelter, physically and mentally.
A city, from a multinational corporation’s perspective, is a local node to which its different components are distributed. Together with other cities where other parts are spread over, the corporation functions as a whole within the global network, thus it is inevitable for a multination business proprietor to fly between nodes to keep the company on track. The client of this project happens to be one of this sort, which brings up an issue of what a house could be like when its owner does not actually live there but just periodically visiting. The loose linkage allows the house divert from the conventional path and requires a new identity. As it only has to function occasionally, the house is more like a private deluxe hotel suite rather than a real home but is required to act like a real one when it performs. Besides the basic provision of living, it is crucial that there are certain flexible designs for diverse programs like relaxed socializing, entertainment and work.

The owner of this project is a post 80s from a pharmacy family, as the third generation, he hopes to subvert the traditional image of pharmacy and melt it into the diversified modern environment. Just like MOLECURE is split and reorganized from words “Molecule” and “Cure”, while approaching to the design, we returns to the original purpose of pharmacy- extracting molecule from nature to synthesize healing drugs. Thus we get the idea of building a space which we named “green in the lab”, combining the seemingly conflicting qualities of “primitive” with “technology”, just like new compounds formed due to molecular bombardment.
Su’ao is an urban township by the sea in Yilan County, Taiwan, and famous for its fresh sea products and the nearby harbor. The idea is to emphasize the interaction between the factory and customer, and optimize the relation between factory and the surrounding environment.
The site is located at the Beitou Qiyan ecology redevelopment district. Therefore, to integrate with the natural scenes of sky and mountains has become a major focus for the project.
Extension after compression
In response to the planning concept of the area, it is required to provide a large amount of open space including the entrance square, street square, dotted square and linear open space for public use. The interior space on the ground floor is reduced, but through the extended floor/ ceiling inside out and by adopting the natural building materials, we add the texture of integrating with the environment and the visual extension. A large number of windows and grills create the openness and layers of the space, which makes even broader visual effect on the ground floor.

The concept, Wabi-Sabi, from Japanese aesthetics is the principle in the project. The materials with texture of modesty, rustic and asymmetry are used as the main substance in the space, trying to create an unrefined and lean atmosphere. Through the peculiarity of imperfection, the inhabitant are led to discern the hidden beauty of the truly excellence and here they can find their pure sanctuary from the turmoil world.

Xrange wraps a new layer of 80- 177cm wide by 7m high living spaces around an existing indigenous stone house to create an “extreme” new house of outrageous living proportion. The newly added programs of pantry, bar, study, library, dog house and bathrooms are new “rooms” averaging about 4m2 in footprint, but with soaring 7m headroom. The new house becomes a sequence of small narrow vertical spaces that interlock like the spaces within an ant colony.
