WHAT IF BY SOLVING ONE IMPORTANT LOCAL ISSUE WE COULD PREVENT ANOTHER ONE FROM HAPPENING?
Taichung City Cultural Center is a project wich aims to present the possibility of using local features to protect from the very location itself turning limiting factors into interesting project features.
Our proposal is strongly based on the idea of a container — a unique vessel that encompasses a multitude of architectural objects, various spaces, and the relationships between them. Inspiration for the design of our shape was derived from traditional Taiwanese basket weaving.
The final result is a unitary transparent skin that allows stolen glimpses of the complexity that lies inside.
Thus this object becomes a contemporary interpretation of an ancient traditional art and culture. Comprised of thin lines of recycled ceramic elements, the skin gently filters the light that reaches the interior and enhances the shapes of the volume. The skin of our design not only serves to enhance the aesthetic value of the building, but it also reduces our impact on the natural environment by taking advantage of passive technologies such as solar shading and natural day lighting.
…is an architectural interpretation of the Taiwanese Mountains reflecting in the sea, a building of 65.000m2 library and exhibition spaces in the Center of Taichung.
The building consists of 3 interconnecting spaces, interpreting known landscape motives.
Taichung City Cultural Centre defines the northern arrival gateway to Taichung Gateway Park, providing a public hub to the overall master plan. As the entry sequence into urban fabric, our proposal reflects the New City’s philosophy of combining nature and innovative technology.
We believe change or new is not a sole creation from nothing but rather evolution from the past. Designing the cultural center was a task to reveal what could be the image of modern and contemporary Taiwan Architecture. Cultural center is a good place to express the identity of the Taiwan.
The abstract idea to represent the spirit of Taiwan was settled into the representation that creates a new image to match and balance with the existing Taipei 101. The characteristics of Taipei 101 were about strong, handsome, majestic, enterprising, powerful etc. as if it is the male tower representing Taiwan. So for the utmost beauty of the nature, the creation of female tower is necessitated to become one unity with Taipei 101 to represent Taiwan’s Spirit.
Working with the contours along the landscape terrain, the design response to the strong wind and sand in winter, as well as the intense sunlight in summer. Looking carefully into the surrounding contexts and datum levels, the design reuse the structure of an existing building, extended it through slanted slabs into the new additions, connecting the building to the sloped ground and reduces the level differences created by the retaining wall.
The Kaohsiung Waterfront is being made accessible to the city and its inhabitants due to the departure of navy and industrial functions. The project proposes a strategy for waterfront redevelopment by integrating the natural beauty of the adjacent forested mountain, a low density residential/leisure oriented program and heavy central business district program in balance.

Critics and practitioners of architecture often convey a contradictory message in a quest to comprehend the essence of iconic architecture. The notions of many recent international projects strive to be iconic, but few actually become truly successful from the point of view of the ultimate critics, the people who use them.
