For the Kaohsiung Port Terminal, we propose a dynamic 3-dimensional urbanism that takes advantage of the site’s unique lateral positioning with respect to the city grid. Existing public pedestrian flows along the proposed elevated boardwalk can be amplified, rather than interrupted by creating a continuous elevated public esplanade along the waterfront. Cruise and ferry functions, meanwhile, are located just below the public level and are kept distinct to maintain secure areas for departing/arriving passengers.
Tower of Change is a proposal for the Taiwan Tower in Taichung. It is an attempt to break out of the usual confinements of architecture. It is a building that perpetually changes in height. It contracts and expands. It develops from to a pagoda like figure in its most compact position to a slender elegant funnel when erect. Tower of Change is an animated building.
Tower of Power features 600 rotors that together produce 6 MW. Tower of Power is not just a symbol of good intentions; it actually produces green energy. Instead of being yet another ‘empty’ icon it actually is a usable object: next to its required functionality as sightseeing tower and telecommunication base it is an environmentally friendly Power Plant.
The Kaohsiung Public Library is a new state-of-the-art multimedia research, study and entertainment space that allows for maximum flexibility. Visitors experience public spaces together at an exhibition or show, or they can “get together to be alone” to read or study. Mecanoo’s response to the design competition comes in the form of a singular building, designed as a garden, which emerges on the site in the shape of a monumental ‘green’ cube.
