The Sovereign pop venue is an icon for musical expression, situated at a prominent location in Hilversum. It lies within walking distance from the railway station, at a major crossroads in the inner-city road network, and is clearly visible from the train. As a consequence, the front on the Koninginneweg is the most important façade: it is The Sovereign’s visiting card.
Villa Groothof is situated in the beautiful surroundings of the city of Barneveld. Each side of the plot has its own quality and stunning views to the surrounding landscape. The client wants a private house that respects these surroundings and the history of the site. Furthermore, the client wants a house with a continuous organisation without any dead ends. This allows him, as a professor, to walk around and think.
Design a church according to the traditional Mennonite principles: a sustainable building, with the user in mind and a space for gathering and meeting. The first Mennonite churches were hidden and inconspicuous; simple places of congregation around the bible. The interiors were sober and as pure as possible. No distraction or ornaments in order to enhance concentration and togetherness. The new church on Mennorode refers to that time.
A building-permit-free garden studio in Voorburg, the Netherlands, to be used by the client as office space and a place for guests to stay. The size of the garden, a brick shed to be maintained, a restricted construction budget and the limitations in height and footprint because of building without a permit, are all of influence on the design. Despite the limitations the starting point was to make a non-static and as free as possible space.
As a graphic design agency we already had a long cooperation with Cortina, a wholesale in gift items, before they asked us to design their new headquarters. It was our first architectural assignment. Fort Cortina is built on the premises of the NDSM-wharf, a former shipyard located on the banks of the river IJ in Amsterdam. In this harsh environment we designed an office and warehouse building that looks like a Morrocan fort. A monolithic structure, rough on the outside with metallized brick walls and smooth on the inside patios that are lined with cedar wood.
Doggers Corner lies near Den Helder in the North of Holland. It is placed in the landscape like a fortress. A paradoxical task: a closed juvenile institute with maximum security in combination with an environment where 144 juvenile residents between the ages of 12 and 18 can receive optimal treatment. The open and relaxed design of the Federal Institute for Youths (RIJ) makes for a privileged environment inside the protection and limitations of a wall.
In an inner courtyard close to the city center of Utrecht a playground is situated for the children of the neighborhood. The old existing building on the playground was to be replaced by a new one. The brief called for a modest, durable and safe new building that would upgrade the playground and appeal to children. The building has separate spaces for a kindergarten. By means of a movable partition the spaces can be interlinked to provide space for different activities and multiple uses.
A deteriorated farmhouse in the vicinity of the castle De Haar was demolished and replaced by a new one. The context of the rural surroundings and the dominant roof shape of the old farmhouse were the ingredients for the design concept of the new farmhouse. The new house has its own strong characteristics and refers to the ‘old’ only at an abstract level and can be appreciated as a ‘sculpture in the landscape’.
