Friday, July 8th, 2011

Article source: Benthem Crouwel Architekten

The house is one of ten prize-winning designs in a competition, subscribed in 1982 in Almere. The brief for the competition was: design a house without bordering for building rules and -restrictions (that is: other than basic structural- and fire prevention-demands). The prize: free use of a building site for a period of 5 years (costs of building for competitors), leaving no traces on site after 5 years. This last restriction was starting-point for a quick design-exercise, starting at 5 am at the last day of entry, with a last minute entry at 4 pm.

Garden City

Oud Krispijn is a neighborhood in the city of Dordrecht. It was planned by Van der Peck in 1932 as a Garden City for the working class: a warped grid, small housing blocks, sweet little houses with front and back gardens, refined ‘corner solutions’, alleys and several ‘green’ axis and some modest squares. And a lot of hedges.

Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

In Osdorp, southwest of Amsterdam, major changes took place to transform a vacant zone into a residential district connected to the existing housing area alongside it. One part of the residential district is a public garden, Jan van Zutphenplantsoen, where the four towers stand along a newly created water-park. All four towers are sited according to the given urban footprint and take up the maximum envelope, giving a total of 390 apartments evenly distributed over 11 levels.

WSTLND in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by NL Architects

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Article source: NL Architects

The Westlandgracht is a relatively unknown, but beautiful canal in the West of Amsterdam. It is located close to the World Fashion Center but still within the ring road A10. This canal has a surprising characteristic: at one point it expands into a giant pond, or a small lake. Our client discovered that the zoning law allows for a small restaurant to be build here. A strategic location: wonderful scenery combined with infrastructure. It is positioned at one of the radial roads from the center into the western expansions.

The Hotel and Sport School Zenden is located within three monumental town houses near the river Maas in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The hotel’s history begins in the late sixties, and originally contained only a pool for swimming lessons. Over the years other functions such as hotel rooms and a Judo school were implemented into the program. Upon the facilities reaching spatial limits, a renovation and reorganisation of the program was needed.
