Grenadier House in Toronto, Canada by Altius Architecture

Saturday, March 1st, 2014

Article source: Altius Architecture

With the backyard now a usable green space, this house accommodates a double carport and garage below the main living quarters of the house at the front of the lot, eliminating the need for a lengthy driveway. The garage creates a split-level concept, with four stories at the back of the house and three at the front.

Inspired equally by elite running culture and its urban locale, the space is nestled at the base of a condo building on King Street West – a major artery for condo development and a common route for urban runners. “It’s an interesting location,” Tong explains, “You might expect a café or a corner store, but Black Toe offers something that a lot of people who live and work in the neighbourhood actually engage with.”

TETRIS HOUSE in Toronto by Reza Aliabadi [rzlbd]

Saturday, October 19th, 2013

Article source: Reza Aliabadi [rzlbd]

We have all played the game “Tetris” at least once in our lives. We were mesmerized by the magic of geometry and rewarded by our efficiency. For rzlbd Tetris is not just a game of block arrangement and fast performance, but it is a quest of effective design. If a designer of space was as structured as Tetris blocks, there would be virtually zero wasted space within a building.

Modernism has a famous motto: A house is a machine for living in. However, as we progress further away from the machine age, we are left with a question: what message should architecture convey? What is the house of today?

To create a building of paradoxes much like it’s site: a building of simple form juxtaposed against a context of a cacophony of form, detail and colour; to create a building passive by day and active at night; direct access from exterior yet complex interior movement and parti.

Whale House in Toronto, Canada by rzlbd

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

Article source: rzlbd [Reza Aliabadi]

The Whale house is another spatial experiment by rzlbd, a monochromic contemporary manifesto that evolves around a central detached box painted in red standing free inside a three storey height foyer. The building appears to have swallowed the box symbolizing the contemplation space inside the spacious jaw of the whale that swallowed Jonah.

Patio House in Toronto, Canada by Reza Aliabadi

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

Article source: Reza Aliabadi

Patio House, located in the Nortown area in Toronto, Ontario, is a minimalist two-storey wood structure house, which carefully responds to three major questions: the needs of the residents, the situation of the site, and the environmental concerns. Being located in a corner lot, the building maintains a presentable façade for the residential street while controlling sun exposure from the west. This strategy has been achieved by inserting a dynamic series of linear windows in the white brick façade and extracting a box from the monolithic geometry to create the patio.
