Set down in a stretching landscape the new studio, its materiality subtle – muted, its form rooted in simplicity – emblematic of modern design, is a controlled gesture, gently resting in the countryside, forming an expression of our ideology.

Kilham House in Winchester, U. K by AR Design Studio

Saturday, July 26th, 2014

Article source: AR Design Studio

Nestled along a leafy lane on the outskirts of Winchester sits Kilham House. Once a tired building with a confusing layout, the house now boasts a contemporary update that really transforms the house into the five-bedroomed family home that it desperately needed to be. A grand, double-height entrance guides you into the building, immediately bringing you into the heart of the home which has now been become the main living space for the family. A large expanse of sliding glazing gives views into the garden, allowing the three children to run wild whilst the parents can relax in the central space and still keep a watchful eye.

The 250sqm site runs east to west and is surrounded by two buildings, a perimeter wall and open on the western side. Initially the ground was pretty level and laid to paving blocks, allowing access to the buildings but serving not much purpose and fairly static. The project took 3 months to build during the wettest winter in the British Isles at a cost of £140,000.
