What surprises people most when entering and walking on the glowing white surface in this particular Private Residence (Williamsburg, VA) is when they find out they are walking on a sea of glass! Yes, GLASS! Not marble, not granite, but GLASS! Nathan Allan has created a very fresh, unique flooring surface, which is smooth to touch on the majority of the glass surface, yet has an almost invisible safety finish permanently embedded in the glass surface.

This project represents the culmination of a 12-year effort to reimagine Williams College’s library and restore the campus’ historic Stetson Hall, which served as the library and now continues in an archival role by housing rare original copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. The results fuse new and old, intertwining the college’s historic roots with the forward-looking views of its scholarly community.

Facing challenges in the form of a modest post-recession budget, the need for a quiet library sited on a bustling urban intersection, and distinct design that needed to remain sensitive to the character of Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood, the new Walker Library serves as a living room for a diverse, arts-oriented neighborhood. The 30,000-square-foot building lies across the street from the original Beaux Arts building that housed the library until 1981, when a gloomy, leaking subterranean library that was anything but a civic asset replaced it.

The renovation and expansion of this 1970s concrete library has transformed it into a 21st century civic place: from book repository to multimedia community hub. The design solution wrapped all sides of the existing library with a continuous reading room, emphasizing places of spontaneous gathering, reflection and learning. The addition also provides a high-performance thermal envelope engineered to harvest daylight and reduce energy usage. Openings at each corner reveal unique public amenities, including children’s’ cubbies, teen gaming zones, meeting spaces and a coffee bar. Within a few months of reopening, user visits increased 55%, with youth program attendance up 160%.
When it opened in 1966, the Renton Public Library was an engineering feat. With pre-cast concrete and wood truss joists creating a stunning 80-foot central span across Washington State’s Cedar River and active salmon habitat, the library is beloved by generations of families and community members. Preservation of this community treasure was a clear priority for the project, but, by 2015, the library’s envelope was deteriorating and not in line with current energy codes. The structural system and chief design element did not measure up to current seismic standards, nor could it handle potential soil liquefaction.

Alancing aesthetics, pragmatic programming, and sustainable design, the 16,000-square-foot Chinatown Branch Library serves as an educational and social hub for Chicago’s historic Chinatown neighborhood. As one of the Chicago Public Library system’s busiest branches, the new library focuses on inclusive community activities and technology-based learning while uniting the two distinct North and South Chinatown districts. The interwoven design elements have created a library that serves as a community anchor and an enduring cultural asset that slips easily into the city’s urban fabric.

CCS Architecture has partnered again with owners Umberto Gibin and Staffan Terje to design their third restaurant. Volta is located in a corner space on Mission Street at the Westfield San Francisco Centre within the city’s Yerba Buena Cultural district. While their current restaurants Perbacco and Barbacco are both Italian, Volta is a departure that incorporates influences from France, as well as Staffan’s native country of Sweden, both in the cuisine and the design.

Cloverdale749 is located around the block from the historically significant Miracle Mile hub comprising the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and many noteworthy cultural destinations. Adhering to a strategy to maximize land use and capitalize on zoning, the building’s 10,500 square feet push against floor area and density limitations determined by the lot’s size and location. In essence, this project is a volume that cannot expand further.

The owner requested a house to foster a certain way of living; to meet individual needs while encouraging the family to be together, to take advantage of Mississippi’s wonderful environment, to interact with friends and family, to have a private respite, to work at home, to be healthy, and to be energy efficient.
