The program called for a home for a family of six in an infill lot. The clients wished for a modern dwelling that would embrace their lifestyle, incorporate the landscape and provide a harmonious backdrop to the modern art and furnishings which they have collected over the years.

The site is flanked by single family homes and is located across the street from the neighborhood school. The design of the home aimed to provide privacy from the school street and maximize the site’s potential for private outdoor living spaces.

Tuesday, March 19th, 2019

Article source: Foster + Partners

The inaugural gala for the Norton Museum of Art was held today in West Palm Beach, Florida, celebrating its transformation by Foster + Partners. The renovation and expansion of the museum has added new galleries and much needed facilities for its visitors, while reinstating the axial arrangement and clarity of circulation of the original 1940’s building. Above all, the museum is no longer surrounded by car parking, but is the focus of an extensive, new sub-tropical garden displaying a magnificent collection of contemporary sculpture. The opening gala was attended by, amongst others, Executive Director Hope Alswang, friends of the museum Ken Griffin and Leonard Lauder, Norton trustees Ronnie Heyman and Gil Maurer, and Lord Foster.

Gator House in Louisiana by emerymcclure architecture

Sunday, March 17th, 2019

Article source: emerymcclure architecture

Off a state highway along a “false” river, an oxbow lake made by the Mississippi, lies a narrow site which slopes to the water, shaded by a 100-year-old cypress tree. Descending the slope, a long skinny camp lies ready for summer weekends and fishing.

In Louisiana, where the natural environment is volatile, wet, hot, humid, and extremely fragile, most buildings seek to resist these extreme conditions. Contrary to the conventional approach, GATOR House encourages interaction with Louisiana’s natural environment. Primarily, it creates human comfort in the seemingly uncomfortable and privileges social interaction in generous outdoor social living spaces. More porch than interior room, almost all occupancy happens under roof or in the shade of the tree. This includes living, dining, cooking, celebrating, and bathing. Using natural ventilation, fans, and deep shade, heat, humidity, and insects are controlled to establish human comfort outdoors. Secondly, it is raised above grade to protect from flooding and is made from materiality that does not rot, resists insects, can get wet, and be wiped down when it gets dirty.

Orum Residence in Los Angeles, California by SPF:architects

Tuesday, March 12th, 2019

Article source: SPF:architects

Perched atop a Bel Air hilltop, Orum is a three-level, 18,800-square-foot home designed to subtly “float” above its environs.

Given its prominent positioning above a relatively developed neighborhood, the motivation behind the design of the home was to create a residence that could meld into its surroundings while maximizing views. The three-story structure, which takes on the shape of a three-winged propeller, is wrapped in glass that mirrors its sweeping views of the Los Angeles Basin, unobstructed from the Getty Center to Long Beach, Century City, and Downtown.

Meg Home in Washington by Olson Kundig

Sunday, March 10th, 2019

Article source: Olson Kundig

An expansive curve and a massive retractable window wall define the form of this 6,050-square-foot contemporary urban residence. Perched on Queen Anne hill overlooking downtown Seattle and Puget Sound, Meg Home takes full advantage of its steeply sloped site with 180-degree views of the urban landscape below. This sense of openness at the back of the home is juxtaposed against the respectful street scale at the front, where an intimate courtyard garden frames the entrance. Much like the outgoing yet reserved owner couple, this home balances transparency with a sheltering sense of refuge.
