MODAA in Culver City, California by SPF:architects

Sunday, November 3rd, 2019

Article source: SPF:architects

MODAA was originally developed by our office beginning in 2003, and it was a project initiated by studio co-founder Judit Fekete-Pali. After several years of renting offices around Los Angeles, she felt it was finally time SPF:a owned the building it occupied. While her first thought was to buy a property and renovate it, Judit had by chance come across an empty lot advertised for sale along Culver City’s Washington Boulevard. The price was too good to pass up and she drafted a scheme to erect from the ground up. Today, this building holds not just our design studio, but a global modeling agency, a co-working space, and the SPF:a Gallery.

Space Needle Renovation in Seattle by Olson Kundig

Friday, October 25th, 2019

Article source: Olson Kundig

Originally built for the 1962 World’s Fair, the Space Needle has become an international icon of the Pacific Northwest and a symbol of Seattle. Constructed in just over a year, the Space Needle pointed the way toward the future with a sense of optimism and possibility. In its 55th year, the Space Needle is again looking to the future with the Century Project, a significant redesign that will preserve the Space Needle’s legacy by creating a new visitor experience for the next 50 years.

“The use and significance of history doesn’t garner much attention in contemporary architectural dialogue, but in the case of the Space Needle, it was a critical and constant baseline for our decisions. The challenge for us was to identify and edit the elements that obscured or limited the original design intent, which provided unencumbered and expansive views of the constantly changing city below. In doing so, we’ve provided a new method for understanding the original structure in ways visitors have not yet seen.” – Alan Maskin, Design Principal

Kent Panther Lake Library in Washington by FIVEDOT

Turning a casino into a public library.

Libraries are key parts of the social infrastructure in our society. One of the few remaining public spaces, libraries are places of sharing, learning and discovery. For this project, we were able to turn a casino, which took from the community, into a library; which gives back to the community.

This was the last project of the Capital Bond Measure in which King County Library systems opened 17 new libraries, expanded 11 libraries, and renovated 14 libraries. As it was the last project, the budget was tight and creative solutions were needed.

Museum of Modern Art Renovation in New York by Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2019

Article source: Diller Scofidio + Renfro

The Museum of Modern Art has completed a renovation and expansion designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler, that has increased gallery space by 30%, provides visitors with a more welcoming and comfortable experience, and better connects the Museum to the urban fabric of midtown Manhattan. Launched in 2014, the first phase of renovations on the east end was completed in 2017, and the second phase of expansion on the west end is now complete and opens to the public on October 21, 2019.

The overall expansion yields a net increase in MoMA’s gallery space of one third, to approximately 165,000 square feet, allowing the Museum to exhibit significantly more art in new and interdisciplinary ways. The design optimized current spaces to be more flexible and technologically sophisticated, expanded and opened up the main lobby into a light-filled, double-height space that connects seamlessly between West 53rd and 54th Streets, and created a multitude of circulation routes with more areas for visitors to pause and reflect. The state-of-the-art Studio in the heart of the Museum and an innovative second-floor Creativity Lab invite visitors to connect with art that explores new ideas about the present, past, and future. The flagship Museum store has been lowered one level and made visible to the street through a dramatic glass wall and a new sixth-floor café includes an outdoor terrace facing 53rd Street. The clear glass façade, new street-level galleries, and a ground floor free and open to all offer increased transparency and bring art closer to people on the streets of midtown Manhattan.

Urban Classic in Chicago, Illinois by BGD&C Custom Homes and Studio Gild

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2019

Article source: BGD&C Custom Homes and Studio Gild

This 7500 sf single-family, 5 bedroom home designed, built, and engineered by BGD&C Custom Homes is located in Lincoln Park. The home features classic architecture and timeless detailing with a brick and limestone façade and prominent copper-clad bay windows; and boasts lavish exterior entertaining space, including a side yard, rear yard, balconies, and roof deck. The clients moving from the Chicago suburbs are empty nesters and have two children.  Amongst the owner’s must haves- an urban home that could comfortably accommodate their visiting children, and spaces throughout designed specifically for entertaining. The house was already partially built when the client acquired a second lot, allowing for two additions – a conservatory-style game room and a music room – also designed and built by BGD&C Custom Homes.

When the homeowners approached BGD&C, they were primarily based in the bucolic town of Woodstock, 50 miles northwest of Chicago. The client’s second-generation, family business in metal manufacturing was based in Woodstock, and was also where they raised their children. While the family enjoyed a second home in Steamboat Springs, CO., the clients decided to embark on the project of building a permanent Chicago residence as they prepared to become empty nesters. They looked to Studio Gild and BGD&C to create an urban compound with ample space for entertaining to not only accommodate guests and their visiting children, but to also ultimately evolve into their forever home. Our collective vision was to create an environment that starkly contrasted with their Woodstock and Steamboat Springs residences, not only by virtue of its urban surroundings, but also with a refreshing and unexpected design approach that would push boundaries.

Lindner College of Business in Cincinnati, Ohio by Henning Larsen Architects

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2019

Article source: Henning Larsen Architects A/S

The opening of University of Cincinnati’s Lindner College of Business is a fortuitous one, marking both the completion of Henning Larsen’s first project in North America and the university’s bicentennial. Completed after two years of construction, the project aims to create a deep-rooted sense of community within the school, combining the strong Scandinavian sense of communal wellness with Midwestern practicality. The project was completed in collaboration with Cincinnati-based studio KZF and BuroHappold.

The 225,000ft2 (approximately 21,000m2) building is located within the heart of the university, a densely urban campus in the north of Cincinnati that boasts an impressive array of notable architecture. The new business school is a hinge within this landscape, linking together a traditional quad and city bus route to the UC Main Street, a pedestrian avenue that forms the school’s social nerve.

Beaver Country Day School in Massachusetts by NADAAA

Thursday, October 17th, 2019

Article source: NADAAA

Beaver Country Day School is an independent school for grades 6-12 near Boston that boasts an innovative pedagogy based on student-centered design. A new Research + Design facility was commissioned to reflect the ambition of the faculty and students to expand the nature of their school. The project involved the transformation of an existing library and a new addition that created a connected campus, placing the new R+D Center at the heart of it.

Across five structures built over the span of 90 years, there was an 8-foot elevation difference from adjacent floor levels, requiring an extensive ramp system to adjoin the levels. Thus, the design includes a three-story connecting “Bridge” that sponsors a variety of student-centered spaces: study carrels, presentation spaces, and lounge areas.

Wednesday, October 16th, 2019

Article source: KPMB Architects

Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, on Northwestern’s campus and with views of the Chicago skyline directly to the south, every element in the design of the new Global Hub for Kellogg is inspired by the School’s vision to rehabilitate business as a constructive and positive force for the benefit of humanity.

The large, five-story LEED Platinum building is designed to optimize flexible, adaptable spaces for learning and collaboration at every scale, from 2 to 20, to 200 to 2000. All program spaces converge at the centre, at the Collaboration Plaza, a three-story atrium where students, faculty and visiting leaders gather. The Faculty Summit, a two-story piazza, forms the intellectual soul of the Global Hub, and offers a place for faculty to discuss, debate and find solutions to the pressing issues of the day.
