Railway Museum of the Netherlands by Arc2 Architecten

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

Article source: Arc2 Architecten

The Railway Museum of the Netherlands is situated at the rear of Maliebaan Station in the city centre of Utrecht. Considerable thought went into how the museum relates to its surroundings. The building consists of a large hall plus three exhibition rooms whose volumes project through the sloping roof. The outer wall is built in brickwork with window strips that are filled with glazing, grilles or sections of weather-boarding according to the interior functions. The structural frame resembles a rib cage, and is supported by columns which branch upwards like trees.

Article source: Wiel Arets Architects

Situated in the Leidsche Rijn, a newly built housing district within the periphery of Utrecht, the Sports Campus aims to contribute a public and rather iconographic aspect to the predominantly low-rise area, lacking points of recognition. Two schools, divided up into four wings, stretched out onto the boundaries of the terrain, are organized around a centrally positioned volume containing the shared facilities.

Residential church XL in Utrecht, The Netherlands by Zecc Architects

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

RESIDENTIAL CHURCH UTRECHT

Context

In the Netherlands there are hundreds of empty churches. Since 1970 more than 1000 churches are closed by church communities. More than 1/3 was demolished and half of the Catholic churches were thrown down. The coming years another 1000 churches will lose their original function. Fewer people go to church and the costs for conservation are no longer affordable. Fortunately, demolition is less common nowadays, partly because churches are often on the monuments list. Re-use is the only way to prevent long-lasting vacancy or demolition. The purpose of the Re-use of the St-Jakobuskerk was to revalue the dignified monument with little interventions as possible.

Sprikk designed a new working environment for consulting agency YNNO. YNNO advises on innovative methods of working and the environments that support these. Their expertise follows the conceptions of the “new ways of working”. As their best reference sprikk planned the office that embodies these notions. In an inner courtyard close to the city center of Utrecht a playground is situated for the children of the neighborhood. The old existing building on the playground was to be replaced by a new one. The brief called for a modest, durable and safe new building that would upgrade the playground and appeal to children. The building has separate spaces for a kindergarten. By means of a movable partition the spaces can be interlinked to provide space for different activities and multiple uses.
