Wasp House is a small house with the area of 3,5mx7m, in the community of Chinese-Vietnamese in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City. This house is built for 2 siblings with 2 floors, each floor is a bedroom. The house is emphasised by the unique stair which is not only used as a stair itself, but also it is a corner for planting some flowers, reading books or just simply sitting down and relaxing.
Separated from the noisy city, the house is humbly ensconced in a small alley on Hoang Van Thai Street, Hanoi.
With an area of just over 46 square meters, the house is required to guarantee essential and necessary functions of a home for a young couple about to get married, however are limited in terms of extremely tight budget, and time of construction as short as possible, especially in the future it can be easily renovated and replaced when the economy is stable and life-changing is needed. Over many plans in place, the architects finally find the most optimal plan.
The house is located in Nha Trang, a city in central Vietnam surrounded by the beautiful ocean and mountains. The client wanted a large house with a large garden. Answering to this request, a single roof is designed as a hanging garden to plant numerous trees and plants on it. The local building code, however, requires almost 50% of the roof area to be covered by gray or orange-color tilings and to be sloped. To obey this rule but maximize the green area atop, the roof is divided into parallel bands of greened roofs and tiled roofs in an alternating sequence.
This house is built on a bad land shape which is separated from the narrowest part of a large land. It has ugly shape and is most cramped. In suburban, people often build houses on very large land plots, therefore, the small area (in comparison with the land in this area) is paid less attention to build a house.
The story began in 2015 while we were doing a construction in Di Linh Highland. Our Uncle helped us look for the materials for the construction, which was our big problem in this rural area (that house also has an interesting story, we’ll tell you later). For many times searching for materials together, we talked more and more about our own future plans and passions. Nothing happened until a few days later he came back and shared his concerns and his plans for a new house.
The Terra Cotta Studio, located next to Thu Bon river in Dien Ban district of Quang Nam Province has a particular architectural structure. Noted for being the working space of renowned artist Le Duc Ha the studio is a beautiful art structure to engage in. The Thu Bon river holds a strong influence on the life of the local residents as a majority of people are dependent on agriculture along with a variety of traditional craft villages such as terra cotta, mat or silk.
In the fast growing Vietnamese economy, ways of living are changing and middle class people tend to prefer living in high rise building apartment rather than in the typical small urban alley, called “Hẻm”.
Hẻm are now considered by many people as dirty, crowded and unsafe.
The rapid urbanization in several Asian cities has dramatically reduced the living area per person. Especially in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, most people, sometimes extended families, spend their lives in narrow and long tube houses where they live apart from nature and in dark and unventilated spaces.
Long tube houses for extended families have always been a complicated question for generations of Vietnamese architects.
This small house is located in a new resindential area in Long Thanh District.
The owner is a newlywed with the desire of having their own house. With the limited area, the architects think that the private space should be shared to have more space for the sharing area.
