Yiwu Foreign Languages School, designed by the LYCS Architecture, is now in use and has just completed its first semester. It is located in the main urban area of Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, with 48 classes of elementary schools and 24 classes of junior high schools. As the first project of returned overseas Chinese, it’s also one of the typical practices of teaching space design issuesComfort scale in high density urban that have been continuously researched by LYCS Architecture.
Yiwu, in China’s Zhejiang province, has established itself internationally for its strong economy, as the world’s largest wholesale commodities market. Domestically, it is traditionally known as a city of trade, thus making it an integral part of the country’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative.’ While being a hub of growing international commerce, the city decided in 2018 that it would focus on culture to further elevate its soft power, and hosted an international competition to design the ‘Yiwu Grand Theater.’ MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, competed against four other global architecture firms, coming out ahead of Arata Isozaki & Associates, Atelier Christian de Portzamparc, GMP, and KDG, to secure the project.
There is merely a city that can be compared to Yiwu, for it combines ancient and modern, the Orient and the Occident so perfectly. This legendary county is famous for its small commodities market and is now introduced to the world again thanks to today’s “Belt and Road Initiative”. Looking back to its hundreds and thousands years’ history makes one feel like step into a flourish forest. Ancient wood and bricks, delicately decorated and carved columns, crowded market and revolving corridors are clearly remembered by the people in Yiwu. YANG has managed to making all these precious moments into Shangri-La Hotel, Yiwu, an urban space full of memories and hopes.
