AECCafe at Bentley Be Inspired

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Bentley is holding a new event, the Bentley Be Inspired Infrastructure Symposium, in Charlotte, North Carolina this coming week. The event will showcase the Bentley BE Awards which are usually announced at the annual BE Conference, which was not held this year. This year, the awards ceremony is by invitation only and will also give attendees the opportunity to speak with finalists in executive roundtable settings.

I’ll be in Charlotte Monday through Wednesday of next week and will be reporting from there.

Digital Project based on manufacturing design platform

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Gehry Technologies’ Digital Project V1R4 SP5 is a departure from most CAD or 3D building information modeling (BIM) tools in that it is based on a design and manufacturing platform – in this case Dassault Systemes’ CATIA, used as a core engine.

The Digital Project suite is comprised of powerful 3D building
information modeling and management tools and includes two base products, Viewer and Designer, and several add-on products: Primavera Integration, MEP/Systems Routing, Imagine & Shape, Knowledgeware, Specialized Translators and Photo Studio.

Designer and Viewer can operate as stand-alone products; and one of those two is required for all add-on products.

Autodesk takes ebayer to court…again

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

One would think that a large software company such as Autodesk would have more to do than to ferret out eBay sellers who are selling their software. But that obviously is not the case:

“The case of Timothy Vernor, the man Autodesk tried to stop selling their software on eBay, has had another day in court.

Vernor is a full-time eBay seller, usually of comic books. But in 2005 he found a copy of AutoCAD design software at a garage sale – software which usually sells for about $4,000.

Shortly after he put the CD on eBay the auction house received a lawyer’s letter from Autodesk alleging infringements of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. eBay pulled the auction but Vernor complained and eBay, and Autodesk, eventually backed down.

But when Vernor chanced upon some more Autodesk CDs, apparently at another garage sale, they again hit him with DMCA notices.”

Simulation seen as critical for design and operation of buildings…

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

From a press release issued by Bentley today:

“Drury Crawley, Ph.D., technology development manager, U.S. DOE, said that in the DOE’s energy building research, simulation has proven critical for designing and operating buildings to support decision making. At the same time it:

•Helps design teams and owners focus energy-use reduction efforts;
•Permits assessment of predicted performance with established benchmarks or goals;
•Enables teams to evaluate alternatives.

Dr. Crawley added that the integration of the U.S. DOE’s EnergyPlus – a comprehensive building, envelope, HVAC, lighting, water, site, and renewables simulation program – with commercial software is critical to bringing energy simulation into mainstream workflows.”

Out takes on AutoCAD Plant 3D 2010

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

“We don’t explicitly have interoperability with AutoCAD Plant 3D 2010 with the other 3D design packages out there, but obviously it supports DWG.”

Additionally, “Navisworks has the ability to bring in the model from the other vendors aggregated into a single 3D representation.”
