Home and school design for Haiti

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

University of Kentucky continues its commitment to helping Haiti get back on its feet with some high performance design using BIM and integrated project delivery.

“Net-Zero Home and School Design
Under the direction of Gregory Luhan, associate dean for research at UK College of Design, students have developed housing and school prototypes that could be used in Haiti. This is a high-performance design build that informs new construction and adaptive reuse of net-zero living, which offers directions for lifestyle change.

This spring semester Luhan’s class of design and engineering students will leverage the fall semester’s research and use IPD (integrated project delivery) and BIM (building information modeling) software to collaboratively design and analyze a variety of approaches through digital simulations and computational fluid dynamics to prove the possibility of achieving net-zero. “

AEC Headquarters showcases building trends

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

This past week I had the pleasure of attending Autodesk’s AEC Division Headquarters in Waltham, MA for a press technology day. The building itself on Trapelo Road is a showcase for what can be done today with new approaches and technology.  An unassuming, box-like, 61,000- square-foot office building that required an entire build-out, the building now is a testament to the use of integrated project delivery (IPD), sustainable design, digital-design-to-fabrication, and of course BIM. Local architectural firm KlingStubbins and Tocci Building Companies were instrumental in bringing these concepts to fruition with their experience in successful deployment of BIM and IPD.

Inside, there are spacious training rooms and conference rooms with 90% natural daylight, as well as a “Telepresence” room where global meetings can be held and everyone “present” can be seen on a wall-sized screen.. Phil Bernstein, FAIA, vice president, Industry Strategy and Relations for the AEC Solutions Division, said this has cut down on their travel expenses as they can now hold virtual meetings.

I am not sure what local materials might have been used, it did seem more of a display of Autodesk technology rather than an implementation of local resources, other than local architectural and building companies.

The meeting was intended as a way to introduce press to the building and to demonstrate the 2011 product line.

Integrated Project Delivery – is it possible?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

At the Bentley Be Inspired: Infrastructure Best Practices Symposium and Awards in Charlotte, NC this past week, an Executive Roundtable discussion included Bentley customers, employees and the press in what turned out to be a discussion of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and what that means to different stakeholders.

One participant said Integrated Project Delivery “doesn’t make it” outside the U.S. Another said that legality and risk make it “difficult” to do IPD. Someone offered that structural engineers are able to do IPD more easily.

The hope among some was that as BIM is better understood, then the BIM model will be relied upon for accuracy. But BIM really asks architects to be as rigid as engineers, and one participant said “architects aren’t usually that explicit.”

This topic was addressed in the AECWeekly article, The Road to AEC Project Execution Success, which drew from a study contracted by software company Newforma, and written by Bruce Jenkins, principal of Spar Point Research.

The study entitled “Mitigating Risk in AEC Project Execution: Perspectives from Principals, Counsel and Insurers,” took a fresh look at the industry from three stakeholder viewpoints.
