Since the year 2000, the City of Trois-Rivières (Three Rivers), Quebec, Canada, is developing a plan to urbanize a site formerly occupied by a paper mill on the banks of the Saint-Laurent and Saint-Maurice rivers. As the development’s masterpiece, the city proposes to build a 10,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre. The site’s exceptional location between the downtown area and the water calls for a landmark building.
An architectural competition was organized to have a design of an international scope. 47 projects were submitted. 3 finalists were selected. The jury recommended the project of Paul Laurendeau as first prize winner of the competition on 4 April 2011. Its decision was based on the following criteria:
The jury underlined the project’s contribution as a structuring element for the future development of the Trois-Rivières-sur-Saint-Laurent. The amphitheatre consists of a delicate horizontal roof of 90 x 95 meters held by 8 columns, 4 on each side, of 1 meter diameter. Its sleek horizontal perimeter starts at thickness 0 and tapers down to 6 meters at 10 meters from its sides. The fly tower serves as a cross bracing element to stabilize the structure and allows thinner columns. The underside is of a black composite material, hiding the structure, while being transparent to sound and wind. The roof protects the 3,500 fixed seats, while the lawn at the back is designed for 6,500 people. Monumental concrete letters, 10 meters high, make up the facade along the Saint-Laurent River. They are meant as playful elements, symbolizing the city that is now expected to extend to the water’s edge, with a large boardwalk linking it to the downtown core. Contact Paul Laurendeau Architecte
