The orthodontic practice, designed by Atelier H-2-A (Dipl.-Ing. Mona Bayr MSc.), combines a historic interior with a water escape.

The orthodontic practice of Dr.Tina Bayr and Dr. Dominik Spaeth is located in the second oldest building in Ueberlingen, in Germany, built in 1601. Atelier H-2-A faced a few design challenges during the renovation, as the exterior façade, wooden beams and interior columns were held under a preservation law.

The challenge was to was, to form a correspondence between a rich, historic past and a new interior installation. The solution came through the use of reflections – creating 3 dimensional bent security glass surfaces that are placed within various substructures. A glass intervention projects wave patterns on the ceiling of the historic building.

These creative constructions also act as animal-inspired sculptures that not only divide the space but provoke fantasies of big, blue whales and increase spatial movement. The elements of the dental chairs and the green glass wall appear as one entity, as the metal structure and the support of the glass wall are produced in the same color as the technical accessories of the dental chairs. Lighting elements located above dental chairs provide optimized lighting for the intense work space.

The geometric form of these morphing walls is also reflected in the design of the reception desk, which connects all spaces in a seemingly single swoop. The glass walls – filled with flowing colors – reflect light onto the surrounding ceiling and walls, transforming a once-feared dental visit into a deep aquarium atmosphere.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION OF THE ORTHODONTISTS PRACTICE IN UEBERLINGEN

Location

The practice of the orthodontists Dr.Tina Bayr and Dr. Dominik Spaeth was inaugurated in May 2011. The renovated spaces are located in the second oldest building in Ueberlingen at the Lake Constance, established in the year 1601.

The exterior facade, as well as the paintings, the wooden beams and the wooden columns in the interior are under a preservation. The challenge was to create a synergy between the old building fabric and the new sterile installation for the dental practice.

Water reflection

Design idea

The Logo of the practice is refl ecting the location at the Lake Constance. The playful character of the logo design as well as the three colors – yellow (sun), blue (water) and green (nature), are translated into the child-friendly design concept.

Approximately 95% of the patients are between the age of 6 to 16 years old, that‘s why the design concept is following the practice philosophie to create a protected and comfortable athmosphere for childs. The challenge was to create spaces just by their ambiance, which inspire the phantasie and the creativity of children for defl ecting them from the thearpy.

Waiting room

Reception – Sun

The practice is welcoming the patient with the yellow, dynamic sculpture of the reception desk. The friendly yellow color is creating a smile on the face of the patients. The dynamic deformed glass counter and the position in the reception space, are opening up the space onto a communicative level.

Waiting room

Waiting room – Water

The deformed glass wall of the waiting room is creating the impression of a moving wave or a liquid element. This effect is supported by the wavy surface of the sculptural wall, which consists out of a 3-dimensional curved 2x4mm security glass, which is creating the impression of a water refl ection onto the old historic building fabric. The „liquid wall“ is generating a coalescence between the old and the new fabric. The arch in the waiting room is painted in yellow as an additional association to the logo of the practice, to illustrate the “Sun“.

Reception

Green doctor‘s offi ce- Nature

All the doctor‘s offi ces are consciously kept open for creating a comfortable space for the young patients and to generate a relaxed atmosphere. The metal structure and the color of the glass wall are produced in the same color as the technical accessories of the dental chairs. That‘s why the impression of the symbiosis of these two elements is created. The technical arms of the dental chairs appear as a part of the structure. The elements of the chair and the wall seem to belong together as one entity.

Green room

The green glass wall acts as a separation wall as well as an animalistic sculpture, which animates the childs to fantazise, if the wall is mutating into a whale, a big ray or an eagle. The reniformed light elements above the dental chairs are generating an optimized lighting for the doctors, as the working space is illuminated ideally. The same time the patient is not dazzled. Yellow doctor‘s offi ce.

Green room

The renovation of the winter garden, with its three dental chairs, allow the patients during the therapy to have a look into the green garden or onto blue sky. Not only the patients as well as the staff, are enjoying the comfort factor of having the impression of working outdoors.

Staff rooms

To avoid touching the arch in the ground fl oor, the „yellow box“ is positioned into the room with its vaulted ceiling. The box is combining the white room, the storage, the small kitchen as well as the locker room for the staff to a compact element.

The indirect lighting of the ceiling is generating a comfortable lighting of the rooms. That‘s why the room is appearing bigger as it actually is. Every single working space has its own lamp, for achieving the optimized working light. Because of hygienic reasons, the laboratory is separated from the big vaulted space. The offi ces are located in the 1st level above the yellow treatment room.
