Article source: Bluarch Architecture Dekko Café is a restaurant/café in the heart of Astoria [Queens, NY]. Designed for Chef Eric Hara [Chef at the Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel], this venue offers casual dining through a contemporary American menu with influences from Mediterranean, French, and Asian cuisines. The openness of the venue to the street and its expansive frameless, operable window systems [they fold totally to show simple wall openings] are at the origin of the name Dekko, which is the British idiom for “look”.
This openness is also behind the design of the restaurant as it takes clues from the urban life outside…in the reflecting chromed ceiling above the bar. The walls and the ceiling are clad in rustic birch, to offer a warm background to the hanging lights all around. These lights turn the space into a lantern, a welcoming presence at an intersection where the elevated train tracks and Newtown Avenue traverse the urban fabric in a crisscross fashion. The entry to the venue is on the north axis. This alignment informs the design of the ceiling fixture, as the light of the North Star is imagined to enter the space… Frosted, half-round Plexiglas profiles attached to the ceiling are aligned on the north axis and further soften the atmosphere.
