In the context of the last seven years migration of romanian citizens on the EU labour market, mostly in the construction field, a great part of it was absorbed by Spain. The small emigrants communities gradually turned to big ones, while the foreign citizens permeated in the local communities, buying properties and starting credit lines, having babies born in the adoption countries. Thus, all that was not just about a simple migration process, while this nomad feeling was transformed gradually, but fast enough, in the status of the second country, the „adoption” one, in which they got the right for work, citizenship, etc. Besides their search for a better economic situation, the people brought with them the tradition and culture of their origin country. This is the way ortodox churches were established, and they usualy function in rented spaces, not always adequate to this function, or other times functioning in catholic churches. All this was performed under the natural need of a better settlement in the adoption country. In Alcala de Henares, the climax of the romanian community was reached at 40000 people who had legal papers. Their vote started being quite important in establishing the power balance between the left and right side party, at the local elections. The town hall leased a plot to the Orthodox Church, in order for the community to build a church there. The building permits and the project execution supervision were done by architect Jose Louis Gonzales from Alcala de Hennares.

The initial task of the project was that of building an Orthodox Church and a parish house for the romanian community in Alcala de Hennares, Madrid, Spain. The construction of the church and it’s executory dependencies will be done on a 1600m plot, chartered by the local town hall to the romanian community. The urban planning regulations, particular for the site, were foresseing a minimum of 3m recession from the property’s limits. Taking in account the triangular form of the site, of it’s location – in an intersection, and the presented feasibility study, the local authorities have accepted the construction of the administrative assemblies on the property limits, towards the sidewalk, special regulations being imposed only near the school and the vacant land, for which the proposed function might be a community centre.

They opted for maintaining a court space as large as possible, released of any building, as to serve the large number of people participating at the liturgy, who could either be sheltered in the church’s interior, or in it’s court yard, a situation also encountered in the specific Orthodox cult, from the important holidays, when the religious ritual uses this space. Additional to the initial theme, there were introduced in the project some other functions, as a conference hall, under the church, catechesis and educational spaces, painting workshops, restaurant and accomodation. The construction of the assembly began in september, 2009, and is, for the moment, in progress, lately, the rithm of performance being a little slower, because of the economical crises and of Spain’s economical state.
