An organic restaurant located on Jiyu Street, which is a short walk from Komazawa Park, one of the biggest parks in Tokyo.
-The restaurant is on the ground floor (half-underground) of a three-story apartment building (reinforced concrete).
Since it is located in a residential area, there are not so many people on the street.
But on the weekend, there are many people walking who go to Komazawa Park for a picnic, especially in good seasons.
– It has three functions such as a takeout, an organic food shop and a restaurant.
– The most distinctive feature of the premises lies in its floor level, which is 1.61m below the ground level of entrance. And the height of the premises is 4.39m.
– To study the arrangement of three functions in such a unique space was the starting point of our design.
– I arranged the restaurant on the half underground floor, the takeout place in front of the entrance at same level as the ground and the shop place diagonally away from the takeout place not to hide the restaurant from the entrance and to get sunlight on the restaurant floor from facade opening.
– The shop place is 0.56m above the takeout place in order to arrange the kitchen under it.
– There are 3 floor levels for each function, so people move up and down in this space.
Front View
– I made different walls in upper space and lower space and partitioned space in different ways so that people can experience different circumstances and be curious about another space. Each space is influenced by another space. (upper space = curved white wall / lower space = right angle turned brick wall)
– I didn’t finish (decorate) original floor, wall and ceiling. So they are all skeleton and not so beautiful.
– In upper space, white wall hides original wall and equipment like air conditioning system or piping. And the wall can serve as frames which show some graphic, plants and scenery of the restaurant. In addition, it surround stairs space and make big void.
Interior View
– In upper space, brick wall looks like a knee-high base of white wall.
– In lower space, you can slightly feel the border (plan) of white wall above your head and it’s quite different from the plan of the restaurant floor partitioned by brick wall.
– The brick wall turns in right angle many times and make hall space on the inside. And it also makes private room, kitchen and storeroom on the outside, which is between brick wall and original wall.
– The hall space is divided into three places, but at the same time they are connected.
– I arranged plants here and there so that people can see them from anywhere.
