Tabanlıoğlu Architects was established by Arch. Murat Tabanlıoğlu in collaboration with Dr. Hayati Tabanlıoğlu in 1990; Arch. Melkan Gürsel Tabanlıoğlu joined the group in 1995. Employing more then 80 architects and 20 administrative staff members, Tabanlioglu head office is located in Istanbul, Turkey.

During the first period of the company, 1956-1990, Dr. Hayati Tabanlıoğlu accomplished major state buildings in Turkey, such as Erzurum Atatürk University (1958-1970), Atatürk Cultural Center Istanbul (1956-1977), Istanbul Atatürk Airport (1969-1984), and several pioneering works like the first shopping mall in the country: Galleria Shopping Center (1986).

During the second period (1990 to present) the company’s scope and portfolio has enhanced, providing services worldwide; in architecture, consulting, master planning, interior design and coordination of related services such as engineering and restoration.

Tabanlıoğlu works comprise a wide range of building types including innovative mix-use projects. Searching for new efficiencies in terms of global and environmental needs and developments, recent Tabanlıoğlu works comprise a wide range of building types including residential and mixed-use complexes in Istanbul, Levent Loft & Loft Gardens and Kanyon including the tallest high-rise building of Istanbul, residential Sapphire Tower; contemporary urban complex Zorlu Center; a stimulating urban transformation project for Istanbul, Galataport; the first modern museum of Turkey, Istanbul Modern; Turkish Pavilion  as one of the most outstanding examples of Expo 2000 in Hannover;  Media Center for CNN Turk and Channel D, as well as several printing facilities and office buildings for Dogan Media Group such as DMC Ankara; office buildings such as ESAS HQ, Ziraat Bank; Zorlu Levent; mix-use and residence projects in Moscow; mix-use complex in Kiev; Palace of Peace (with Foster and Partners), Expo Center, Astana Arena, Media Center and, Fitness Center, Abbaya Office Tower in Kazakhstan; Amman Officers Club Tower in Jordan; public projects like Tripoli Congress Center, Sirte Lounge in Libya, Congress Center in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; high-rises in Dubai ; Hotel Rixos Libertas in Dubrovnik; Hotel and summer resorts in the Aegean Coast of  Turkey; innovative shopping mall projects E5, Marmara Forum and M1Meydan in Istanbul, Asmacatı in Balçova İzmir and other retail facilities in Turkey; industrial buildings like Tunacelik and Nova factories; and renovation projects such as Beyazıt Library from the 16th Century, the memorable Tarabya Hotel and  Hayati Tabanlıoğlu’s Ataturk Cultural Center.

The office has been awarded several international and national prizes;

Tabanlıoğlu received the 1st prize in the competition for the Bodrum Airport International Terminal in 1998 (now under construction. In 2000, the European Convention selected Dogan Printing Center in Ankara as one of the four best steel constructions in Europe for Constructional Steelwork. The winner of the Design Competition for the Municipality Building& City Hall of Istanbul, in 2001. In 2002, Media Town has received the Building Design Award of The Chamber of Architects of Turkey. Cityscape Architectural Review Awards Juries has granted the big awards for  Galataport and Istanbul Modern Art Museum in 2005; and in 2006 for Kanyon which also received ULI Award for Excellence, Europe; in 2008 Doğan Media Center Ankara, Levent Loft  and Zorlu Center; in 2009 Hotel Libertas Rixos. Doğan Media Center Ankara has been granted XI. National Architecture Award (2008) in Built category, and in 2009 selected for the IF Communication Design Award. Levent Loft and Zorlu Center are chosen as the best projects in their categories CNBC Arabia Europe & Africa Awards in 2009; Astana received “2009Trimo Architectural Awards”. In 2010 major awards for the Tabanlioğlu projects have been: MIPIM AR Future Project Awards : Loft Gardens,  Commended; Cityscape, Abu Dhabi, MENA 2010 Best Residential Built Development Award: Levent Loft; Cityscape Awards for Architecture, Community Built Category: Tripoli Congress Center;  International Property Awards International Architecture Award Winner- Public Sector: Tripoli Congress Center; MEA- Middle East Architect Award Architect of the Year: Melkan Gürsel – Murat Tabanlıoğlu; MEA- Institutional and Cultural Project of the Year: Tripoli Congress Center, Green Good Design Award : Zorlu Center (with EAA); Glass Leaf Awards – Astana Arena (finalist), METU- Middle East Technical University Student Center Building and Public Square Competition Project (2nd Prize). In 2011 Astana Arena is awarded by International Property Awards as the Winner of Public Section Asia-Pacific Region. Loft Gardens project received 2011 RIBA International Awards for “the excellent work being done by RIBA members around the world”

Besides several architectural awards Tabanlıoğlu ranks 79th in “BD World Architecture” top 100 list of year 2009.

Murat Tabanlıoğlu (RIBA, Chartered Member, AIA International Associate Member) studied architecture at Vienna Technical University and graduated in 1992. He founded Tabanlıoğlu Architects in cooperation with Dr. Hayati Tabanlıoğlu in Istanbul in 1990. Besides his atelier program at Istanbul Bilgi University, he lectures at universities and various international platforms

Melkan Gürsel Tabanlıoğlu  studied architecture at Istanbul Technical University. After gratuating in 1993 she attented Polytechnic University of Metropolitan Catalonia for her Master of  Architecture. She joined Tabanlioğlu Architects in 1995 as partner of the company. In addition to several architectural prizes, recently she has been selected as one of the “Europe 40 under 40” for 2008.
